Meeting with Chad Stahelski
John Wick is back John Wick: Chapter 4 and the promise of big action spectacle is well delivered. In Osaka, Berlin and above all in Paris, the “Baba Yaga” really shows that it is standing still deadliest opponent. With bare hands, with knives, with firearms or at the wheel of a car, nothing stops him and we don’t sulk in front of this magnificent debauchery of violence (here our review).
A spectacular show directed by Chad Stahelski, director of the 4 films John Wick and former stuntman – he was notably Keanu Reeves’ understudy in Matrix -. Suffice to say, when it comes time to put the action on screen, he knows a ray of it, especially if he’s directing Keanu Reeves, with whom he’s now collaborated for more than two decades. We had the opportunity to meet him on the occasion of the release of the new film John Wick, in particular to discuss with him the formidable sequence around the Arc de Triomphe.
“Difficulty makes quality”
the adventure John Wick it began in 2014 with a first film and, as the director himself admits, he had no idea at the time where it would take him. Today, John Wick has become a very popular and profitable franchise, which rises a notch at the global box office with each new film. Films that, while remaining faithful to the genre cinema they are inspired by, now claim great inspirations. Thus, Chad Stahelski talks about Kurosawa, Bertolucci, Leone or even Tarantino (video at the beginning of the article).
But if there’s one aspect that the director wants to highlight to explain the success of the John Wick saga, that’s it the necessary work to deliver new sequences, ever more amazing fight choreography and stunts that Tom Cruise wouldn’t deny.
There is a phrase that I really like. “If your goal is to get to the top, you must love climbing.” (…) In “John Wick”, we are ready to do the work, to suffer, but we love the work. So with my crew and my actors, it’s not just about getting a good scene or making a successful film. It’s about doing that job.
There’s a reason you don’t often see disco scenes with waterfalls, attack dogs in many movies, or the Arc de Triomphe with 50 cars and a fight scene in between. . They are difficult to turn. It’s not impossible. In Hollywood, nothing is impossible. You have to know how much you are willing to suffer to get what you want.
