The drama, selected by TrustNordisk for international sale and presented to buyers at the Cannes Film Market, takes place in 1945, after Denmark has been liberated from Nazi occupation. Some 250,000 German refugees who arrived in Denmark shortly before their release are housed in internment camps, including one at a local secondary school. Asbek plays a school principal who, along with his wife and children, must decide whether to support the anti-German sentiments of the Danes or try to help refugees.
The film’s Danish title roughly translates to “release”, but the film does not yet have an official English title.
Walter wrote the script. Befrilsen, Produced by Miriam Nørgaard, Mette Host Hansen and Tomas Radoor for Nordisk Film in collaboration with Growing Studios. With a budget of $4.3 million (€4.1 million), filming is complete and will take place locally on September 23, 2023.
TrustNordisk will sell the film in Cannes without the actors and the English script, and hopes to show the footage to buyers at AFM later this year.
Walter debuted in 2017 i kill giants It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and in 2013, his short film Helium won an Academy Award for Best Live Action.
