Super Mario Bros. : a good animated adaptation
While film adaptations of video games are rarely convincing, Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath have found the right recipe with the film Super Mario Bros.. Produced by Illumination and Nintendo, animated feature film occupies the universe of Super Mario for an adventure faithful to the spirit of the games.
We find Mario and his brother Luigi sucked into a magical tunnel but separated during their journey. If Luigi discovers a dark world, Mario is catapulted into it a fairy world with talking mushrooms and a princess who wants to stand up to the terrible Browser.
Even if it’s more focused a young audience, Super Mario Bros. uses everything players know. The story fits perfectly the universe imagined by Nintendowhich allows to make the film a coherent work, in the same way as all the derivatives (game and other) that followed the first Super Mario Bros. released in 1985. And even if the story remains very classic and without surprises, the controlled animation is full of joy.
The two post-credits scenes
While there was a time when post-credits scenes were all about superhero movies, now all big productions usually add a little extra for moviegoers willing to stick around until their show is over. Thereby, Super Mario Bros. do not escape him and he too two additional scenes. The first comes quickly and sees Bowser behind a piano sing about his love for Peach.
A funny sequence that pushes even further the delirium of the antagonist who imagines he can bewitch the princess by calling her “Peachounette”. Above all, the sequence ends with an even funnier twist. Bowser is actually still tiny and locked up in a cage guarded by a “Toad”.

After this funny gag, the most important thing comes right at the end of the credits a second scene. We are taken this time into the channels of the human world and discover the presence ofa white and green egg. Everything points to it being yoshia major character in the video games and conspicuously absent from the film Super Mario Bros.. Indeed, even if during a scene we can see other dinosaurs of his species in the distance, THE Yoshi awaited by the fans is not there.

With this scene, directors Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath thus open towards a possible sequel that this time would involve the character. Provided of course that the box office results are convincing enough to produce a new film…
Super Mario Bros. will be released in theaters on April 5, 2023.
