The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan before Milady
The first part of the diptych adapted from the work of Alexandre Dumas The Three Musketeers directed by Martin Bourboulon has been in theaters ever since April 5th last. Focused on the character of D’Artagnan (François Civil), it allows us to get to know the new musketeers, camped by Vincent Cassel (Athos), Romain Duris (Aramis) and Pio Marmaï (Porthos).
The feature film is particularly interested in the plot of the queen’s stallions. Thus, the latter (camped by Vicky Krieps) has an affair with the Duke of Buckingham (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd) and offers him her stallions to show him her love for her. King Louis XIII (Louis Garrel), informed by Cardinal de Richelieu of this gesture but unable to believe it, he then asks his wife to wear this famous studded necklace to Gaston de France’s wedding as proof. Thus begins a race against time between D’Artagnan, charged with going to England to recover the jewel, and Milady (Eva Green) charged by Richelieu to take possession of it too.

The film ends on a cliffhanger, with Milady asking the Cardinal to get rid of the Musketeers. But the rest of the story will only be visible in eight months. Indeed, the second film, centered on the character played by Eva Green, will not be released in theaters until December 13, 2023.
Why so much waiting?
The two movies The Three Musketeers they were filmed simultaneously in the summer of 2021 in France. From the outset, it was obvious for the two screenwriters Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière to divide Alexandre Dumas’ work into two feature films. They thus explained in the columns of First :
If you adapt The Three Musketeers in its entirety, you get a 120 hour feature film! So there was no point in trying to do a linear adaptation of the novel. It was necessary to find the spirit and the intention of Dumas (…) Very soon we have a certainty: two films are needed. In the book (…) there is no scene between Milady and D’Artagnan for 300 pages. However, we couldn’t get Eva Green to appear in the middle of the second film. (…) But from the moment you bring the character of Milady into the plot, there is a domino effect. The two films were therefore crucial for this reason. And also from the very structure of the work cut in two: the studs of the queen then the seat of La Rochelle.

About eight months apart between outputs of D’Artagnan AND LadyArdavan Safaee, president of Pathé Films, said in an interview with Boxoffice Pro (via AlloCine) that this strategy was meant to ensure that the second film made as many admissions as the first:
When we go to see a film at the cinema, the base of the audience that will go to see the second film is necessarily that of those who have seen the first and no one else. So unlike the two parts of Mesrine, released one month apart, we decided to wait for the exploitation of The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan in cinema, VOD and television, on a pay channel six months after its release (… .) As a result, perhaps we will have broadened the audience base and launched into the promotion of the second film, or even pulled D’Artagnan out for a few days. It is necessary for us to have a second operational life of the first part before releasing the sequel.
What does the second film have in store for us?
The Three Musketeers: Milady will be, as the name suggests, largely dedicated to the antagonist of the Musketeers. As Eva Green confided to our microphone, we will find out in this new film Milady’s part of humanityand the reason that led her to become this evil woman:
In the second part we will discover her cracks and her vulnerability behind her shell of a strong woman. We have never seen this aspect of Milady. I really liked that they added humanity. Milady is haunted by this desire to take revenge on men and we will understand why. In the second part we will discover the warrior side of Milady.
