Dracula : a long series of adaptations
If the vampire has been a mythical creature of European folklore since the dawn of time, Bram Stoker popularized his image in 1897 with Dracula. Thus, the novel follows a ghost who sows terror in Transylvania but who hides his true identity by embodying a seductive count.
The book establishes for the first time the codes of the vampire as we know him today. above all, Dracula will see a number of film adaptations that are sure to establish thea creature in the collective unconscious. Indeed, to date, there are more than 200 films in which Dracula plays the lead role. The novel itself has film versions that have become cult today.
Among them, we can keep Nosferatu (second adaptation of the work, although it remains unofficial since it was made without obtaining the rights to its original material), Dracula (by Tod Browning), Dracula’s Nightmare (camped by Christopher Lee), Dracula (by Francis Ford Coppola) or even Dracula never told. If vampire productions have become huge hits with audiences, they therefore owe it to Bram Stoker’s novel. In the 1920s, the latter is also experiencing a popular resurgence with American cinema as new adaptations are being prepared. Between them, The last voyage of the Demetra.
A vampire on a boat
Directed by Norwegian director André Øvredal (Troll hunter, The identity of Jane Doe), the film adapts a particular chapter of the novel Dracula. This is in fact the part during which the terrifying vampire boards a freighter that transports him from Transylvania to London. Project prepared for over twenty years, The last voyage of the Demetra is now ready to hit theaters. And ahead of its first trailer, the film will be there to scare.
Produced by Universal (which has long held the rights to the work), The last voyage of the Demetra then follows the crew of the Demetra who will experience very strange events during its sea crossing, in fact, a horrible creature has taken its place on board and is determined to follow all the Men who are present in the boat. If the vampire has been portrayed as a hero, anti-hero, or comic figure in recent years, The last voyage of the Demetra remember that this creature of the night remains dangerous to humans. The trailer of the film therefore presents us with a heavy and creepy atmosphere, in which Dracula appears in a horrible ghoul form, similar to that of the Nosferatu of Murnau. Unlike recent adaptations of the character, Dracula here is a ruthless monster who doesn’t hesitate to kill his victims.
Note that the cast of The last voyage of the Demetra has a number of well-known comedians such as Corey Hawkins (NWA: Straight out of Compton), Liam Cunningham (game of Thrones) or even David Dastmalchian (Dunes). As for the person who embodies Dracula, it will be Javier Botet, a Spanish actor known for playing monster roles such as in rec. The film is expected to be released in theaters on August 9, 2023.
