Fashion for health: what is a medical exam and why should you have one?

Fashion for health: what is a medical exam and why should you have one?

In May 2022, VTsIOM conducted a study which found that 86% of Russians only go to the doctor when something hurts them. At the same time, 32% of respondents said they only go to the hospital in case of urgent need – when they get very sick.

Is this the right way to treat your health? Of course not! But you are probably already asking yourself a question: is it possible to come and see a doctor when you feel well? Yes, and again yes – this is precisely why there is a medical examination of the National Health Project, which we will talk about today.

Meet Dispensary!

The idea of preventing disease by monitoring human health has been around for a long time. Today, in most developed countries there are public programs for regular medical examinations, and Russia is no exception. In 2018, our country endorsed the concept of predictive, preventive and personalized medicine – medicine that will study your individual characteristics and tell you how to stay healthy at any age.

To this end, medical examinations and preventive medical examinations were invented – under the national project “Health care” by 2024, 70% of Russians should undergo them annually. It’s easy to do: no need to save money or go across town – a set of studies designed for early disease diagnosis is available to everyone. All you have to do is go to the clinic in your place of residence with a passport and compulsory health insurance.

Dispensary in numbers

  • In 2022, more than 51 million Russians underwent medical examinations.
  • About a million people have learned that they have a chronic disease of the cardiovascular system.
  • 40,000 patients were told about the oncological disease, 76,000 were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.
  • In 84% of cases, people undergo medical examinations in public medical institutions.

Why do you need a dispensary?

As the VTsIOM survey has shown, preventive examinations are most often carried out by those who are already 60 years old. However, you should not wait until the birthday to start taking care of yourself – every woman needs a medical examination, and it does not matter whether she is 18 or 70 years old.

The first and most important task of clinical examination is the detection of diseases at an early stage. For example, for many people, myocardial infarction becomes a thunderclap, because before this acute coronary event, they did not experience other manifestations of coronary heart disease. Oncological diseases can develop imperceptibly, it is not for nothing that one can often hear: “Cancer does not hurt!

Any doctor will confirm that the earlier a problem is detected, the easier it is to treat it. Therefore, do not be afraid that “something will be found”, it is better to find out about the difficulties in a timely manner. The doctor won’t say to any diabetic patient, “Don’t worry, we’ll cure you!” This disease can only be compensated, but prediabetes is a reversible disease. Medicine in Russia is one of the fastest growing fields, but in order to take advantage of its achievements, it is very important to seek help at the right time.

“I’m afraid to imagine what would have happened to me now if I hadn’t had a medical examination two years ago! Thanks to the mammogram, the breast cancer was detected at the first stage, and I didn’t even feel a lump in my chest.

According to the opinions on the medical examination

The second task of the clinical examination is to identify the factors that can provoke the development of the disease. For example, many women see extra pounds as a figure flaw that prevents them from wearing tight dresses. But it is the medical examination that will let you know when you need to lose weight not “for the beach”, but in order to avoid coronary heart disease and the risks associated with it. Agree, the motivation to lead a healthy life will increase immediately!

The third objective of the clinical examination is the control and prevention of exacerbations of already known diseases. If a person has had a myocardial infarction, there is a risk of having it again. To prevent this from happening, the patient and the doctor should jointly monitor certain indicators – weight, sugar and blood lipids. All factors that adversely affect health should not be left unattended – only in this way can you maintain health.

Of course, going to the hospital is different from going to the nail salon. But now, a timely consultation with a doctor is a real self-care and a must for every modern woman. For happiness and beauty, regular medical checkups are far more important than a stylish haircut, retinol face masks or chocolate body wraps.

We study the composition: what does the medical visit consist of?

Do you know what sulfates are and why shampoos containing them can damage your hair? Not bad! And can you answer the difference between medical visit and preventive medical visit? No? Now let’s fix it!

The preventive medical examination (PME) is sometimes called “facilitated clinical examination” – it is essentially the heart of its first stage. People between the ages of 18 and 39 can have PFS every year.

The preventive medical examination includes:

  • Quiz

> 18 years old – once a year

  • Calculation based on anthropometry: body mass index, waist circumference

> 18 years old – once a year

  • Blood pressure measurement

> 18 years old – once a year

  • Determination of blood cholesterol and glucose levels

> 18 years old – once a year

  • Determination of relative cardiovascular risk

18-39 years old – once a year

  • Definition of absolute cardiovascular risk

40-64 years old – once a year

  • Fluorography of the lungs or x-ray of the lungs

> 18 years old – once every two years

  • ECG at rest

at the first visit, then > 35 years – once a year

  • Examination by an obstetrician-gynecologist

women aged 18 to 39 – once a year

  • Intraocular pressure measurement

> 40 years – once a year

  • Appointment with a doctor based on the results of the PMO, including an examination to identify visual and other localizations of oncological diseases

In addition to the prophylactic examination during the medical visit, there are screenings aimed at detecting oncological diseases, brief preventive advice and other examinations. From 18 to 39 years old, you can undergo a free medical examination every three years, from 40 years old – every year. The set of examinations depends on the age of the woman.

At 18-39 years old it is:

  • Cytological examination of a smear from the cervix

every three years

  • Examination of the skin, mucous membranes of the lips and oral cavity, palpation of the thyroid gland, lymph nodes

From 40 to 64 years old:

  • Examination by an obstetrician-gynecologist
  • Cytological examination of a smear from the cervix

every three years

  • Mammography of the mammary glands in two projections with double reading of x-rays

every two years

  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy

> 45 years old

  • Examination of feces for occult blood

every two years

  • Examination of the skin, mucous membranes of the lips and oral cavity, palpation of the thyroid gland, lymph nodes
  • Complete blood count – hemoglobin, leukocytes, ESR

It is important to know! You can take one day’s paid leave to take the medical examination.

After completing all studies, you will see a therapist, because no one will leave the patient alone with epicrisy – a bunch of documents that are not so easy to understand without medical education. They will explain what the test results mean, tell you about any identified diseases and existing risk factors, and help you develop a plan of action to maintain your health. If the doctor is alarmed by something, he will prescribe additional procedures – they will become the “ingredients” of the personalized second stage of the medical examination.

5 myths about the medical examination

According to data from the VTsIOM, 20% of Russians have never undergone PMO or clinical examination. Why do one in five people refuse to engage in disease prevention? There are stereotypes, because of which people refuse to undergo a medical examination, and today we want to destroy the main five.

The medical visit is a new and useless service

For many, the medical examination seems to be a “fashionable” notion of civil servants, of which there is no advantage. But in fact, regular medical check-ups date back to the Soviet era and were the cornerstone of the entire healthcare system, the efficiency of which was the envy of neighboring countries. Today, the medical examination has only taken a second wind – its benefits and effectiveness have been confirmed by years of existence.

A medical examination is carried out for the show

Often people believe that the clinical examination is a formal procedure and that the same set of examinations will not help identify the individual problems of a particular person. However, the basic set of screenings and analyzes is only the first step in the clinical examination. If they report any issues, the second in-depth stage begins, which will be trained “for you”.

The medical examination must be carried out in a private clinic

Prophylactic medical examinations and preventive medical examinations are free of charge. This often scares people: how can something useful not cost a penny? This is how the myth was born that preventive research should not be conducted in an ordinary clinic, but in a shopping mall. However, the key factors for a successful medical examination are high-quality equipment and a good doctor who can correctly interpret the data received.

Both can be found in public and private medical facilities. Remember: in Russia, not only a business woman can take care of her health, but also an ordinary teacher working in a kindergarten, and the main thing is not your level of income, but your will to treat this problem and the prophylactic knowledge the medical examination and the PMO are accessible to all.

Dispensaries take a long time

The medical examination program is specially thought out so that you can complete it in three to four hours (and some “larks” who came to the clinic at eight in the morning write that two were enough for them). The main thing is to read the research preparation memo so that you are ready to take all the tests and follow the necessary procedures.

Young people do not need a medical examination

Those who have just turned 18 are shown no younger than 40. The sooner you start monitoring your health, the better your chances of maintaining it. It is better to prevent the first heart attack than to treat its consequences and try not to carry the case to the second. Peptic ulcer is a precursor to cancer, so to avoid it is to get rid of serious problems in the future.

To pass a medical examination, all you need is a passport and a compulsory medical insurance policy, and you can schedule a visit to the clinic via the call center or the My Health service on the service portal of the ‘State. Take the time to do this if you want to stay healthy and never cross the line where disease prevention becomes a cure.
