The film begins with Beau (Joaquin Phoenix) visiting his shrink. He announces to her with some apprehension that he is going to visit her mother. But after a rough night and several adventures, this tortured hero loses his plane and crashes. He does not despair and does everything to arrive safe and sound. During his journey, Beau saw unforgettable, scary, crazy and poetic adventures.

Joaquin Phoenix ‘humbled’ himself to free himself

Beau is scared allows Joaquin Phoenix to deliver a new performance of rare intensity, to be classified among the most complex of his already very rich career. The actor embodies here a kind and terrified character, overwhelmed by the madness of the world around him (and which perhaps is also his) of him and crushed by the shadow of a suffocating mother.

The first part of the film takes place in New York and mostly in his apartment, where the protagonist locks himself up to escape the violence of the street. In this chaotic city, Beau is tormented by hallucinations. While taking a bath, a man clinging to his ceiling, for example, disturbs him. To prepare for this scene, Joaquin Phoenix had to get rid of his nervousness and “humble” himself for it.

To stop worrying about the gaze of others, the actor started screaming, as he says an A24 podcast :

I’m a little hesitant to say this, because it sounds so stupid and seems like one of those stupid things to play… I was still nervous and in a way, in control. So I just remember thinking I must do something stupid. (…) I just started screaming. It was the most intense and guttural cry of pain possible, because I just had to humiliate myself completely. Once that happens, you can’t look as stupid as you did then. And free everything.

A particularly effective technique according to Ari Aster, which made it possible to create the strange atmosphere on the set that the film needed. Beau is scared it is to be discovered in theaters April 26, 2023.
