Blanche Gardin vs. Amazonia

It was in harsh terms that Blanche Gardin denounced Amazon’s practices on April 20, 2023 and, more specifically, Prime Video’s proposal to participate in the new season of the comedy program. LOL: whoever laughs, gets out! for an amount he considered indecent. In the words of the stand-up star and movie actress, it really is €200,000 that were offered to him a day of shooting. Blanche Gardin, known for not having kept her political positions secret, thus brought an indictment against Amazon, declaring:

Yes, it annoys me to receive, for 8 hours of work, this infuriating figure from a company that:
– It does not pay taxes in France and even benefits from a 1 billion euro tax credit while achieving a 50 billion euro turnover.
– Which emits 55.8 million tons of greenhouse gases per year (the equivalent of Portugal’s emissions) with its data centers alone, not to mention the thousands of trucks, planes, etc.
– Who uses labor from Uyghur concentration camps.
– Which destroys jobs in small trade and all the social life that follows.
– That the jobs it creates by destroying others are grueling jobs in dehumanized warehouses, where employees are treated like robots being squeezed by insane pressure on them at infernal speeds and prevented from unionizing…

“Fake and inaccurate comments”

Reproaches that caused a sensation, both with Blanche Gardin’s supporters who praised her speech and with her detractors, who denounced hypocrisy of the one who produced his series The best version of myself on the side of Canal+, whose main shareholder is the controversial Vincent Bolloré. The actress’s statement even concerned the Amazon company itself enough to bring it publicly his answer.

Communicated by Amazon’s French media relations agency, the company’s response is attributed to one of its spokespersons. Her words are as follows, and they echo many of the points criticized by Blanche Gardin:

Madame Blanche Gardin’s statement posted on social media contains false and inaccurate Amazon comments. For more than two decades, we have been striving to earn the trust of our customers in France by contributing to the dynamism of the territories, by offering an excellent quality service, a wide range of products and low prices, despite the rising cost of living. We have made an ambitious commitment to fight climate change with The Climate Pledge, to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.

We support the growth of more than 13,000 French small and medium-sized businesses in France that sell on Amazon and have created more than 35,000 jobs. We pay our fair share of taxes, amounting to €1 billion in 2021, and offer our more than 20,000 employees in France a safe and modern working environment, with competitive salaries and excellent benefits.

Two points of view which, it is no surprise, should remain irreconcilable…
