BRI: Canal+’s new crime series impresses

Jérémie Guez, special force of detective fiction

Like the members of the Versailles BRI group who spend a lot of time in their powerful and discreet cars, Jérémie Guez has found his best vehicle ? A powerful and discreet figure also in detective fiction, Jérémie Guez writes novels, screenplays for others, for himself, has already made three feature films, a web series and now a very large format first series from one of the specialists of the genreco-created and co-written with Erwan Augoyard, and directed all episodes.

Realism of situations and inspiration of real facts to varying degrees, from Mafia TO brave passing by the monument gearsfrench crime series lives with the times and BIS is no exception to the rule. Be realistic to hold on to a reality as much as possible, BIS assumes it as soon as it opens with the introduction of the group leader“false” protagonist, a few minutes before the assault on the Bataclan, on November 13, 2015: She said (Sofiane Khammes), who came from military intelligence and had just joined the BRI.

New generation

The story of a transfer of power, of a legacy to manage, therefore begins there, in front of Patrick (Bruno Todeschini), a sort of “cop” of the past, who discovers something in Saïd. A few years later, a few weeks before his retirement and without further explanation, he recommended Saïd as head of his group.

BIS rings generational change. For Canal+ it was necessary to deliver a creation worthy of taking overgears, a very good crime series that retired in 2020 after eight seasons and fifteen years of good and faithful service. There is also this in BISOf the daily and almost sensual immersion with which we follow the group. A sensuality all the more underlined by the youth and vitality of the cast. Apartments, night outings, conversations in a hideout, silent but explicit solitudes… Breathless, physical, BIS yet she remains committed to painting her characters as accurately and humanely as possible. Thus, they do not advance in disguise, but reveal themselves cautiously and slowly. The actors and actress who play the members of Saïd’s group are as talented as they are charismatic and deserve to be seen.

Badri (Rabah Nait Oufella) is discreet and hides from his mother, with whom he lives in a housing estate, that he is a policeman. Julien (Wael Sersoub) is as strong and efficient on the pitch as childish and concerned in his privacy. Also Vanessa (Ophélie Bau). tenacious and determined how thoughtful. Finally there is Socrates (Théo Christine), full of energy and mystery, arrived from narcotics and who has his methods … All are brilliant, invested and credible, and we remember in particular the too rare Ophélie Bau and the very charismatic Théo Christina.

Nervous like North Ferryreturned as November

Among the protagonists of the new detective fiction, Jérémie Guez is not far from Cédric Jimenez. Indeed, there is edginess and realism in his staging of the action, real violence without being propagandized, and an application that his show does not take precedence over the specific issues of the characters. The director thus entrusts to his characters, and to what their interpreters render perfectly, rather shy personalities, willful but cautious. Territories and stories to explore, which unfold as the series progresses, on its catchy rhythm.

If we add the convincing performances of supporting roles such as Emmanuelle Devos and Hugo Dillon, always so charismatic and disturbing, the cast as a whole is extremely convincing. With one notable exception. In the role of Éric Perez, gypsy caïd and former informant of Patrick, Vincent Elbaz composes a caricature and a book a failed performanceunfortunately fragile, almost systematically expelling the viewer from the unfolding drama. An excessive interpretation which serves on the one hand the realism of the series and on the other the attractive universe communicated by the performance of Nina Meurisse.

Time needed to adapt

Immersion series in the police environment, BIS it also shows the criminal underworld, depicting today’s organized crime and its conflicts between the El Hassani brothers and the gypsy Perez clan. The complexity is that Jérémie Guez rightly dwells on his police officers, and still randomly opens up on those they are pursuing. Not that we’d want to see more of them yet, but we miss the performances from the series’ “detective” cast as soon as we don’t see these characters anymore. We understand the ambition to cover these two worlds, but the imbalance is evident. A small flaw that is unavoidable when establishing the universe and its hierarchies, but which in no way detracts from the good sensations provided by BIS.

After its dramatic and spectacular finale, the first season of BIS he has thus laid very solid foundations for the future, both on the police and criminal side, a chessboard on which to unleash war and multiply intrigues. I can not wait to be there.

BIS by Jérémie Guez and Erwan Augoyard, on Canal+ da April 24, 2023. Above the trailer. Find all our trailers here.
