After failure in Spain, Netflix postponed expansion of plan to monetize shared accounts

A Netflix suffered a loss of 1 million subscriptions in Spain in the first quarter of 2023, according to a Kantar survey (via TV Cultura). The country is one of those chosen for the application of the new account sharing policy. Canada, New Zealand and Portugal also suffered from the change.

The streaming platform itself confirmed the loss of users in territories where it is necessary to pay an extra fee if you want to use the account in more than one household. The strategy was to force people using borrowed accounts to subscribe to the service or pay the higher rate, but that doesn’t seem to be happening.

The new system would be implemented in more countries even in the first months of the year, but the Netflix chose to postpone until the next quarter after the negative results disclosed in the balance sheet.

How does Netflix ‘device verification’ work?

If an account is constantly accessed from another location, the Netflix will verify, sending an email with a code to be inserted in the device trying to make the connection. The charge will not be made automatically, but the company may block access if connections are constant.

“If an account Netflix is used by a device that is not associated with the primary account owner’s residence, the device will need to be verified before it can be used to watch the Netflix,” explained the company. For travel, the user can carry out the verification procedure from the code for up to seven consecutive days
