Still water : Matt Damon dipped in Marseille

Premiered at the last Cannes Film Festival, Still water is the new feature film by Tom McCarthy (reflector). Expected for September 22nd in French cinemas it follows Bill Baker (Matt Damon), an American father who travels to France, to Marseilles, to visit his daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin) locked up behind bars. This time he intends to prove her innocent and wants to get her out of jail. But his task is not easy in a country with a very different culture. Fortunately he can count on Virgine (Camille Cottin), a Frenchwoman with whom he will form a strong bond.

As we pointed out in our review, the film struggles to convince as a whole, despite being more stunning than we expected. You will form your opinion in more than a month but, in the meantime, Still water is at the center of a controversy.

A film based on a true story, which is controversial

Amanda Knox, the woman whose story served as inspiration for the screenplay, recently spoke out and is not tender with the film. She reveals it no one asked her permission to adapt her story and bitterly regrets seeing how Tom McCarthy has used his image. In a Twitter thread, she elaborates on what worries her at length:

Does my name belong to me? My face ? My life ? My story ? Why does my name refer to events I haven’t attended? I come back to these questions because other people continue to take advantage of my name, face and story without my consent. The recent example is Stillwater.

I keep being accused of being “the one who knows something he doesn’t want to reveal”, of being “involved even if I didn’t put the knife in”. So the fictionalized version of Tom McCharty is just a guilty tabloid version of me.

A sordid story

The movie really echoes the mishap of Amanda Knox and barely hides it by naming Abigail Breslin’s character Amanda as well. The real story took place in Italy. During a visit to Europe as part of her studies, the main suspect was found guilty of the murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher. However, it was not she who was behind her death, but Rudy Guede.

She regrets it too That Still water disrespect the real victim of the case and bounty be taken. Her disappointment is understandable, especially when it comes to such a traumatic experience, and the most inappropriate thing is that no one has come into contact with her instead of exploiting her experience. But it should also be emphasized that Still water it’s not just a legal thriller. The scenario begins with a premise extremely close to the Amanda Knox case, and then after a while it becomes something else.
