The Solution Book : a director adrift
Eight years later Microbe and DieselMichel Gondry has finally returned to the cinema with The Solution Book. If the director hasn’t been inactive, he signs off on the series make fun of, several short films or clips for The White Stripes and The Chemical Brothers, his inventiveness, personality and energy were missing in the dark rooms. And they are a pleasure to see from the first minutes of your new film, which begins with a meeting.
A meeting between Marc (Pierre Niney) and his producers that takes a disastrous turn when he learns that control of his feature film is slipping from him, after making an initial cut of more than four hours. refusing to let go, flees with the rushes and goes to take refuge with Aunt Denise (Françoise Lebrun), with her editor Charlotte (Blanche Gardin) and her assistant Silvia (Frankie Wallach). Their goal: to complete their project.

For this, Marc in particular will have to do it overcome his paranoia and his phobia of confronting the images he has taken. He therefore relies on Solution booka work that he designed in his childhood, should be able to solve most of mankind’s major problems.
An intimate project for Michel Gondry
In Michel Gondry’s filmography, The Solution Book sides more with Microbe and Diesel AND The thorn in the heart of that of Be nice, rewind AND The dregs of days, both in its economy of effects but also in everything it represents to the director. The director here becomes Marc, while his aunt Suzette – the focus of the documentary The thorn in the heart – becomes Denise. Marvelously embodied by Françoise Lebrun, the latter is its main bulwarkan artist who never ceases to dispersewho throws tantrums and constantly has the feeling of being manipulated.
Having discovered that he was suffering from a manic-depressive state during a photo shoot, Michel Gondry recounts this experience in The Solution Book, where the main remedy for his problems is often escape. This initially causes a series of comic situations in which the viewer delights in the lunar behavior of the protagonist, under the hallucinatory gaze of Denise, Charlotte and Silvia, who hold on. But, without naming the disease, the feature film switches to a last more serious act, where the character’s feeling of loneliness and sadness takes over. In this sense, The Solution Book it surprises more with its dramatic turn than with its rather minimal stage effects.

This simplicity in implementation is ultimately beneficial and promotes emotion, where the visual ambition of The dregs of days ended up swallowing the feelings of the overwhelming story of Boris Vian. Michel Gondry seems much more comfortable here and becomes surprisingly more measured in production than he is, but less modest in its way of opening itself to the viewer. Unlike her character, she no longer takes refuge behind her crazy creativity and gives up completely.
Pierre Niney’s whirlpool
To give life to his reflection, the director can count on Pierre Niney, great from start to finish. Marc’s character allows the comedian with an incredible flow to vary the tempos, but above all to do itdo everything in the comedic and dramatic registerswhich up to now he has never really been able to do, often having to settle for one or the other.

The actor displays such vivacity that at times he seems to eclipse everything else. An all-eating ability that would point out the feature film’s weaknesses? Under no circumstances, since then her hysterical performance serves the film’s purpose wonderfully. And Marc’s interpreter sometimes knows how to let himself be forgotten, as in the last brilliant plan which confirms once again that Michel Gondry has found the perfect balance with this Solution booka true artistic achievement.
The Solution Book soon to be discovered at the cinema. The film was presented at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes of the 76th Cannes Film Festival.
