Eurovision winners sell cup for $900,000 to buy drones for Ukraine

Ukrainian group Kalush Orchestra, winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, sold its cup for $900,000 to obtain drones for the country’s armed forces fighting the Russian invasion.

The money raised will be used to buy three Ukrainian PD-2 aircraft, said TV presenter Serhiy Pritula, who hosted the auction, according to Reuters.

The glass mic cup was sold at auction on Facebook, the group wrote: “You guys are amazing! Thanks to each and every one of you who donated to this auction and a special thanks to the Whitebit (cryptocurrency exchange) team who purchased the cup for $900,000 and are now the rightful owners of our trophy.

Sunday’s sale coincided with the band’s appearance at a benefit concert at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate to raise money for medical care and supplies, the BBC reported. At the concert, band member Oleh Psyuk urged people not to tolerate the war that started with the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24. “It should always be on the front pages until peace comes,” Psyuk said. After a public vote in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest on 14 May, the Kalush Orchestra won the competition with their song “Stefania”. The group was given special permission to leave Ukraine for the event, as most Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 cannot do so if they have to fight.
