Nothing to loose : when everything collapses
Delphine Deloget’s first feature film, Nothing to loose opens with a frantic run. While his mother Sylvie (Virginie Efira) works at night as a waitress in a bar, teenager Jean-Jacques (Félix Lefebvre) rushes to the hospital to pick up his little brother Sofiane (Alexis Tonetti), who has second-degree burns. More fear than harm, and the little family immediately resumes its normal life.
But following a report, their daily life suddenly collapses when the welfare of the children takes Sofiane. Sylvie and Jean-Jacques fight to get it back. Determined to fight to the end to bring home the youngest of her, her mother sinks and sinks into depression.

Virginie Efira overwhelming
After her fabulous performances in See Paris again, Other people’s children OR Love and forestsVirginie Efira shines again Nothing to loose. inhabited, the actress has no problem making us believe in this character and her breakdowndespite an awkward narrative that lacks nuance.
As soon as the clashes between Sylvie and the childcare members begin, the feature film turns into the comparison a bit Manichean, often portraying the helpers as people severely lacking in empathy, starting with the one played by India Hair. However, a brief exchange tries to legitimize their emotional distance but unfortunately does not prevent a profound imbalance in the treatment of the characters.
Virginie Efira still bears the wrath of the film, gradually loses her nerve and it sinks without ever sinking into caricature, surrounded by equally excellent supporting roles, including Félix Lefebvre, Arieh Worthalter and Mathieu Demy. Everyone deftly transitions from heartache to desperate humor, managing to build a loving family that continues to support each other despite resentments and disagreements.

A risky outcome
The anger emanating from Nothing to loose offers memorable but questionable scenes. The feature film ends with a risk-taking with which the title takes on all its meaning, and which leaves the viewer wary of the future of the protagonists.
Does the law deserve to be circumvented in the name of love that unites a family, however fragile and flawed it may be? This is what the film seems to be saying, which raises doubts and confirms the feeling that Nothing to loose takes the side of a mother who struggles to get up, hiding until the end the advantages of a system that is certainly unfair, but sometimes necessary.
Nothing to loose it is to be discovered in cinemas from November 22, 2023. The film was presented in Un Certain Regard at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.
