Kevin Spacey says he intends to “appear voluntarily” in a UK court to defend himself against the four counts of sexual assault he was charged with last week.
In a statement provided exclusively to ABC good morning americaThe actor said he was “confident” he could prove his innocence on the charges made by the three men, which include four separate incidents.
“I am very grateful for the Crown Prosecution Service’s statement, in which they carefully reminded the media and public that I have the right to a fair trial and to be innocent until proven guilty,” a spokesperson said. “While I am disappointed in his decision to proceed, I will voluntarily go to the UK as soon as possible and defend myself against these charges, which I am confident will prove my innocence.”
The British Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), a public agency that prosecutes in England and Wales, authorized Space’s indictment on May 26.
“CPS has shown that it is suing Kevin Spacey, 62, on four counts of sexual assault against three men who are now in their 30s and 40s,” said Rosemary Einsley, director of the CPS Special Crimes Unit. “He was also accused of having sex without consent. The charges were followed by a review of the evidence he had gathered. [London] Metropolitan Police in their investigation.
Einsley said two alleged incidents took place in March 2005 in London against a man, while a third sexual assault allegedly took place in August 2008 against another man. The fourth sexual assault allegedly took place in April 2013 against a third man in Gloucestershire.
