The rebirth of transformers continue with The rise of the beasts
After directing the first five films transformers, Michael Bay first left Travis Knight with the daunting task of reviving the franchise with Bumblebee (2018). The film was a real breath of fresh air to revive the saga. And the change of director was then consistent. Taken by Travis Knight a more intimate directioncondensed on the touching relationship between a teenage girl (Hailee Steinfeld) and the famous yellow Autobot – see our review.
This time with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, it’s Steven Caple Jr’s turn to continue the reboot of the saga (which began with Bumblebee). Putting aside all the intrigues of Michael Bay films, the feature film takes us this time in 1994 in New York.

The Autobots have therefore been present on Earth for seven years (Bumblebee takes place in 1987) but Optimus Prime still doesn’t trust humans. He will still be led to cross the street of Noaha young man trying to get by to help his mother and take care of his brother, eElenaintern at the archeology museum.
A forgettable story and characters
Here we find the usual concept of transformers which always involves human characters to try and bring emotion and a form of empathy to the viewer. Only that this duet, however correctly interpreted by Antonio Ramos e Dominic Fishbackit is quickly revealed uninteresting and too serious.
And while humans usually offer a slice of levity between clashes between giant robots, here they just do it slow down From Transformers: Rise of the Beastswhen I’m not reduced to figurative. After all, the very choice of placing the story in 1994 adds nothing (except the soundtrack), where Bumblebee it was built around the 80’s vibe.

This disinterest for Noah and Elena is all the more harmful since, in parallel, the global scenario involving the Autobots, Maxims and the soldiers ofUnicron (huge creature that devours planets) feels hot. Even in the unfortunate choice of set Bumblebee aside (best character of the saga), since he is behind the highlight of the eccentric Mirage who befriends Noah.
The harmful absence of Michael Bay
Of course, it’s not so much for the story of the Autobots that we were able to get passionate about movies transformers. This was above all a pretext for Michael Bay to propose increasingly Dantesque action sequences. Whether we like it or not, we have to admit that the director has a style all his own.
It is in its excess that we can as much to enjoy as to be disgusted. His explosions in abundance and his camera movements in all directions to follow the big shots fired by these giant robots were always fascinating. The director manages to make the viewer feel, especially by correctly involving the human characters. That can never do steven caple jr.

Certainly special effects they are impressive, with a flawless reproduction of the giant robots. Only, offers the director of Creed II (2018). a totally disembodied staging. Nothing deeply bad or shocking. Just a soft realization that is satisfied with little. Like some Marvel productions, the film stays on most of the time watch the fights rather than engaging his audience.
And it’s not a pseudo-sequence of a few seconds that manages to save the furniture duringa totally forgettable final fight. Therefore, although the ingredients are there, it must be admittedwe get bored in front of it Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. A film that never manages to surprise, except for a final scene that reminds us that the intention is to sell Hasbro toys.
