Apple unveils Vision Pro, the headset for virtual reality
This Monday, June 5, 2023, Apple fans were in an uproar. And for good reason. Eight years after presenting the Apple Watch, the American giant has unveiled its own latest creation : the Vision Pro, the mixed reality headset, during the WWDC conference. Mixed because this newest gadget (called a “space computer”) will offer both augmented reality and virtual reality experiences.
Therefore, when the user uses the augmented reality headset, Eye view mode it will allow you to see the user’s gaze, who will also be able to interact with the other people present in the room, or in its environment. Conversely, when immersion mode is activated, EyeSight mode will give way to a black screen, indicating that the user will not be able to perceive his surroundings.
It is this modality, in total immersion, that particularly interests us. In fact, it will be possible to watch films and series in an immersive way, at home, with the impression of being in front of a large screen.
A revolution for watching movies and series?
Apple’s Vision Pro headset features Micro-Oled screens, with higher resolution than a 4K TV in each eye (the company claims 23 million pixels). It will be possible to watch movies and series with the helmetwhile having the impression of being in a cinema.
Indeed, the user can choose to enlarge their virtual screen to be up to 30m wide. A format larger than IMAX (22m). Until now it was possible to view the contents with the various VR viewers available on the market, but with a much lower image quality. In this, it is a real revolution for users. As far as sound is concerned, the helmet has a headphone system equipped with Spatial Audio technology, which adapts according to the room for a surround effect.
Above all, it will be possible to directly connect the different streaming platforms to watch your favorite programs. Apple TV+ of course, but also Disney+. The interfaces have been specially designed for Vision Pro.

Apple is also highlighting a feature that will let you choose a “volumetric environment” to view around themselves, for even more immersion. A knob on the back of the helmet will adjust the degree of immersion.
The autonomy of the helmet is instead only two hours, when it is not connected to the mains (an external battery will be connected to the helmet, via cable). However, it should be possible to use the headphones while connected to the mains.

If you bought a new state-of-the-art television, powerful speakers, a powerful computer with multiple high-definition screens, a sophisticated camera, and more, you wouldn’t come close to what Vision Pro offers.
so confided Richard Howarth, Apple’s vice president of design.
Price and availability in France
Of course, this technology comes at a price. And it’s quite high. In fact, Apple announced that Vision Pro would be available for $3499 (€3275). As for its availability, the company announces “early 2024” in the United States. An estimate of its availability date in Europe, and therefore in France, is not yet known.
