Guillaume Canet appointed president of the jury of the 2023 Deauville Film Festival

Guillaume Canet will preside over the jury of the 49th Deauville Festival

Like every year since 1975, the city of Deauville in Normandy becomes the capital of American independent cinema for ten days. From 1st to 10th September, festival-goers will be able to discover dozens of films presented in the official selection, in competition or out of competition. And to decide who will succeed the overwhelming after sun, winner of the prestigious Grand Prix last year, the actor and director Guillaume Canet was appointed president of the jury. The other members have not yet been announced.

In a press release shared by the Deauville Film Festival, the actor and director said he was very happy and proud to have been chosen to preside over this future jury. He also took the opportunity to Declare your love for American independent cinemawith which he grew up, and which has never ceased to inspire him:

I’ve always been fascinated and passionate about independent American cinema. And in particular that of the 70s. Sam Peckinpah, Jerry Schatzberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese… These directors have often been able to express themselves freely without the commercial pressures of the big Hollywood studios. Exploring new narrative forms, experimenting with new techniques and challenging traditional conventions.

This cinema I grew up with has given birth to many talented directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Sofia Coppola, Wes Anderson… And many others, who have brought their unique vision to the American film landscape, a refreshing alternative to mainstream production. And it is above all this creativity, this audacity and this diversity that I appreciate so much in independent cinema. This contribution to enrich and broaden our cinema experience
