THE my fault by Joseph Fiennes
The Fiennes family consists of several movie characters, the most prominent of which to this day is Major Ralph. But there is also the younger Joseph, born in 1970, himself an actor and whose professional choices will generally have been less successful. Except for some titles like Shakespeare in love, Stalingrad AND The merchant of Venice, his appearances in other productions very often in costume are not really remembered. In this shaky time, Joseph Fiennes also appeared on television, particularly in the series The Handmaid’s Talebut also completely failed by incarnating in the series Urban myths controversial icon Michael Jackson. An episode titled “Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon”that only a few “privileged” will have been able to see, from cthis never aired. And for good reason…
“A Big Mistake”
When the trailer featuring the anthology series aired in 2016, the controversy was immediate. Indeed choose a white actor, Joseph Fiennes therefore, to embody Michael Jackson in a program that was meant to be “light”, passes neither with the family of the deceased artist, nor with his fans, nor with the general public. The uproar is such that the Sky company does not hesitate long and announces in January 2017 that the episode “Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon” will finally not be not transmitted :
We have made the decision not to air the ‘Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon’ episode of Sky Arts’ Urban Myths series, after considering the concerns expressed by Michael Jackson’s immediate family. (…) Joseph Fiennes fully supports our decision.
In an interview recently published by The GuardianJoseph Fiennes returned to this faux pas, explaining that he took full measure of his error:
I think people were absolutely right to be angry. It was a bad decision. There are no doubts. And I’m part of this bad decision – with the producers, the broadcasters, the writers and the directors… But being on the front lines, I’ve actually become everyone’s voice. I wish they were there too, to talk about it. All of this happened at a time when there was a change in society, an evolution for the better, and it was obviously a wrong choice. A serious mistake.
Joseph Fiennes today regrets having lent himself to this production, adding that he then “personally asked the broadcaster to cancel its broadcast”. Which resulted in “intense discussions”, but which in the end “the right decision was made“.
