The idol : a drifting pop star
Series that has created controversy since the departure of director Amy Seimetz, replaced by co-creator Sam Levinson (Euphoria, Malcolm & Mary), before some team members described the scenario as “pornographic sexual torture”, The idol continues to generate conflicting opinions. While the first two episodes have been unveiled, the show is a success and continues to dividesome criticize him for over-sexualizing his heroine and offering gratuitous and deeply embarrassing scenes.
The HBO program tells the story of Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), a young singer who is about to release her new album, while still deeply affected by the death of her mother. One evening, during a club outing, she meets Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye). She is immediately attracted to this nightclub manager who promises to help her in her career. Without realizing it, she Jocelyn falls into a trap and an unhealthy relationship.

Lily-Rose Depp thus embodies a star who, despite her omnipresent entourage, has almost no reference points, feels deeply alone and is under constant pressure, fearing that she will never live up to the expectations of those close to her. The series starts on a take, during which the heroine reveals her chest. An intimacy coordinator played by Scott Turner Schofield then interrupts the session to remind her that her contract does not allow her to pose topless. The singer’s manager, Chaim (Hank Azaria), decides to get involved and lock the young man in a roomoffering $5,000 to another person to make sure they don’t walk out.
“I really felt cheated”
Asked by varietyintimacy coordinator Marci Liroff, who she especially worked on Hightown AND The taste of life in this position, he confided his reaction to seeing this scene. She explains she was shocked:
To be honest, I had a very visceral reaction. I was shocked.

If Marci Liroff has “I really felt cheated”along with other intimacy coordinators, this is partly because HBO was the first company to hire a qualified person for this positionAlicia Rodis, in 2018 for the series The devil. Marci Liroff said about it:
We consider HBO our stronghold, so to speak, because their work with Alicia Rodis has been so good that they’ve made hiring an intimacy coordinator mandatory for all projects on HBO. This set a standard, followed by many other broadcasters and networks. So I felt really cheated that they made fun of us and our work. They used us as the butt of their jokes.
Looking back, the intimacy coordinator has has revised his opinion on this scenewhereas it contains a part of truthfulness:
I’ve been faced with situations where there’s been a lot of resistance from a director or a producer who doesn’t really understand what we’re bringing to a set. Our position is very similar to a stunt coordinator and you would never do some of the things that have been done to me in a stunt coordinator. So, I thought about it and realized that this was actually a very accurate representation, albeit taken to an extreme, of some of the crazy resistance I experienced.
