Speaking director and explorer James Cameron
This Sunday, June 18, 2023, OceanGate’s Titan submarine departed his dive and his descent to the wreck of the Titanic, which is located at a depth of 3800 meters in the North Atlantic, about 700 kilometers from the Canadian coast. As the Titan and her five passengers were due to surface a few hours later, communication with the surface was quickly lost, raising fears for the worst. After several days of searching and growing anxiety, the United States Coast Guard officially announced on Thursday evening, June 22 that the exploration vehicle had “imploded” during its descent. Unfortunately causing the disappearance of its five passengers.
Our hearts go out to these five souls and all their families at this tragic time. We mourn the loss of life and the joy it brought to everyone they knew. This is a very sad time for the entire explorer community and for each of the family members of those lost at sea.

Among the many comments, tributes and even criticisms of the shipment that went wrong, one voice in particular is heard. Indeed, director and deep sea explorer James Cameronfamous in particular for having achieved the great success titanic in 1997, he is passionate about oceanography, wrecks and submarines. He has therefore personally performed more than 30 dives at the site of the sinking of the Titanic. Director of numerous seabed documentaries and having contributed to many technological innovations in the sector, talked about the Titan incident.
“It’s really surreal”
It was on the American channel ABC News that the director of titanic and the saga Avatars took the floor. He was very critical of the conditions under which the exploratory mission of the OceanGate company was carried out. Indeed, he points the finger at the fact that those responsible for the shipment have ignored the numerous safety warningsand sees in it a similarity to the sinking of the Titanic, on the night between 14 and 15 April 1912.
I am struck by the resemblance to the sinking of the Titanic, where the captain was repeatedly warned of the presence of ice ahead of his ship, yet charged full speed into a field of icebergs on a moonless night. . (…) That a very similar drama is happening in the same place, where warnings have been ignored, is simply astounding. It’s really surreal.”
He then recalled that the company’s submarine OceanGate has been the subject of much concern within the community of underwater explorers. For him, the first concern of explorers is implosion. A mortal risk due to the extreme pressure exerted by the deep waters. James Cameron then stated that “it is the nightmare we all live with“.
Many people in our community were concerned about the condition of this submarine and some had sent letters to OceanGate. The Titan was not certified.
A tribute to Paul-Henri Nargeolet
The Canadian director also wanted to pay homage to his French counterpart Paul-Henri Nargeolet. The latter, a 77-year-old aquanaut and Titanic specialist, is in fact one of those missing in this tragic accident. The two men had known each other for 25 years.
He was a legend of exploration. It’s almost impossible for me to accept that he died, tragically, like this.
