The keto diet and intermittent fasting have become the talk of the town. But should their union be considered a prisoner of heaven?
The keto diet was originally created for the treatment of diabetic patients, but over time it started to be used for weight loss. The premise of the keto diet is simple: switching to a low-carb, high-fat diet should induce a state of ketosis, when the body begins to break down fat for energy.
Intermittent fasting is another medical practice that can do everything from weight loss to reducing insulin resistance. IG suggests “windows” for eating – for example, only ten or eight hours a day. This diet is reminiscent of the classic “no eating after six o’clock” – you can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, for example, only from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Keto diet & intermittent fasting: what’s going on?
Naturopathic doctor and nutritionist Jaime Scher of New York considers herself a big fan of intermittent fasting: according to her, this food system helps people focus on quality foods and not eat at night when we are subconsciously looking for care or comfort.
Jaime treats keto with much more skepticism. According to the doctor, this diet is a well-thought-out scientific method to help patients, not to lose weight, but to cope with serious health problems. Cher thinks most people can’t maintain keto — and they don’t need to.

These two methods are combined, Jaime explains, so that you can quickly go into the very ketosis mode that burns fat. However, according to Sher, there is no guarantee that this will happen in three days – it all depends on how the body absorbs and uses fats, proteins and carbohydrates.
What should you know before trying the crash keto diet?
However, rapid weight loss is a promise that is hard to resist. To make the experience as safe as possible, Cher recommends controlling three aspects:
- Dehydration. Pay attention to the amount of water you drink – its lack in the context of a keto diet can lead to serious problems.
- Availability of quality products. Ask yourself if you can access the food you need at any time? Will it be varied enough? Will your accelerated keto turn into regular fasting?
- Stress. If you understand that now there are too many experiences in your life, it is better to postpone the diet until better times.
