Its use of IMAX camerasAlso noteworthy is the possibility of obtaining a larger image format and with a better resolution. An expensive and technical process but that allows immerse the viewer even more when the film is projected on an IMAX screen.

Nolan had used IMAX before since The dark Knight (2008) to film some scenes. With Oppenheimergoes even further, since his entire film was shot with IMAX cameras on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film. To which was added another challenge: the use of black and white.

Sequences that are actually Lewis Strauss’ point of view, opponent of the physicist and embodied on the screen by Robert Downey Jr. To differentiate the two points of view, Nolan therefore makes this choice in terms of colors. A detail that may seem insignificant but in reality it is a real technical feat since when is it first time that the scenes were filmed on black and white IMAX analog film.

Until now, black and white, when appearing in so-called IMAX scenes, was only achieved in edit the image in post-production. The transition from color to black and white is also widespread with traditional formats.
