Strange things it was harder than ever with horror with Season 4 proving that the deaths thanks to Demogorgon and Demodogs were nothing compared to what Vecna had in store. Vecna’s first major victim was none other than cheerleader Chrissy, who hid a lot of emotional pain behind her smiles and her athletic boyfriend. According to the Duffer brothers who created Netflix’s hit record, they had no choice but to kill Chrissy even though they found a reason to keep her alive.
Chrissy seemed to have the potential to play a permanent role in Eddie’s story early on when she went to buy him drugs. It’s not the origin story of the cutest relationship in TV history, but there was a great chemistry between actress Grace Van Dien and Joseph Quinn (whose Eddie is one of the main characters in vol. 1 ), and it seemed they could subvert expectations and have a future together. Instead, of course, Chrissy was Vecna’s first on-screen victim and was brutally murdered in front of Eddie while she was being tortured in his mind. from the monster formerly known as One whose processing achieved through practical effects .
So why did he die even though it apparently became a fun match for Eddie? The Duffer brothers confided in each other television line with Matt Duffer sharing:
We always have those moments. [of ‘What have we done?’] We shot the scene of the drug dealing in the woods, quotes without quotes, quite late, actually, during filming.
The drug deal in the woods between Eddie and Chrissy happened quite early in the Season 4 premiere, but was filmed at the end of filming, which meant the outcome was already decided. Ross Duffer clarified, adding that “Chrissy was already killed when we shot this.” RIP Chrissy! As sweet as they were in their woodland drug scene, and it takes skill to make a scene about selling sweet drugs, their fate was already sealed.
At least there is no denying that his death was one of the pivotal moments of the season, as it brought Eddie into the fold of those of Hawkins who know all the quirks of the Upside Down and set the whole story in motion. Plus, if the kids weren’t told that the Upside Down was causing trouble again, they might not have the clues they needed to find a way to save Max in time.
Matt Duffer has only positive things to say about the two actors who made Eddie and Chrissy so endearing in such a short time:
The scene came to life in such a beautiful way. And a big part of that was Joe and Grace. It was just one of those lucky scenes where we were able to shoot two cameras while capturing them at the same time. Joe was doing a lot of spontaneous things and we got these amazing reactions from Grace.
It was one of Eddie’s last big scenes before everything went wrong for him, and right now there is no guarantee that he will survive season 4 to make it to the fifth and final season. Let’s hope he doesn’t follow in Benny, Barb and Bob’s footsteps and die at the end of his first season! At least his name doesn’t start with a B?
