Unexplored : new adaptation of the video game

We know it video game adaptations are a touchy subject in Hollywood. Good video game adaptations are rare, as if a curse hovers around these projects, despite the recent successes of The Last of Us and of Super Mario Bros. the movie, which finally seem to reverse the trend. In 2022, Sony Pictures decides to undertake the adaptation of one of its flagship video game franchises: Unexplored. For the occasion, the studio hires the director Ruben Fleischer (Welcome to Zombieland, Poison) to lead this adventure. As for the casting, Mark Wahlberg is chosen for the role of Sully, while Tom Holland plays Nathan Drake.

The film, quite faithful to video games, a sort of modern day Indiana Jones, received mixed reviews from critics. As for the box office, the feature still brings more than 407 million dollars of recipe. However, as it stands, we still don’t know if Sony will extend the saga with a sequel.

Soon a unexplored 2 ?

Shortly after the release of Unexplored, director Ruben Fleischer has expressed a desire to make a sequel. With its $400 million in revenue, Sony should logically give the go-ahead. Recently, producer Charles Roven, who worked on the first film, revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that a sequel was about to be launched:

We had a lot of fun with this movie. Fans loved the result, and even people who knew nothing about the game loved the movie. So we definitely want to do another one.

The production of unexplored 2 it hasn’t officially launched yet. But all the lights are green. It remains to wait for the end of the writers’ and actors’ strikes that are currently shaking Hollywood. As a reminder, Unexplored is a video game license produced by Sony and developed by Playstation. The very first game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune released in 2007. Currently, the series has eight games which have been sold for more than 41.7 million copies all over the world.
