The film Barbie, a summer 2023 hit, features a royal cast. For Barbie and Ken, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are responsible for their embodiment. For the other Barbies and other Kens, there are in particular Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Dua Lipa, Kingsley Ben-Adir… We also find Will Ferrell, America Ferrara, the voice of Helen Mirren, and even a cameo by John Cena. A prestigious cast that could have been even more prestigious, as Greta Gerwig recently revealed. In fact, explained the director into CinemaBlend’s microphone which, initially, Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet were supposed to do an appearance in Barbie.
An actress and an actor he knows well, having directed them both ladybug in 2017 and 2019 a Dr. March’s daughters. Explains of the Irish-American actress:
It would necessarily have been a small participation, because Saoirse was in production at the same time, and also, I’m very proud of her for that. She is obviously brilliant. It would have been a special cameo. And I was also going to do a special cameo with Timmy (Timothée Chalamet, ed). They couldn’t come and I was very annoyed! But I love them so much, it’s like doing something without my kids. Finally, I’m not their mother, but I experience it a bit like this.

Timothée Chalamet wouldn’t have screwed up another version of Ken – if that was the plan – but unfortunately his schedule made that impossible. In fact, when the filming of Barbie took place, between the end of March and mid-July 2022, he had just finished shooting Wonka and was about to start those of Duna, second part. Two films from Warner Bros, like Barbie, and the studios probably did not want to mix their brushes and preserve their actor, the main role of these two great productions. However, Timothée Chalamet, as Greta Gerwig told Hollywood First Lookcame to visit the set of Barbie and issued the regret of not being there.
Timothée came to the set and said, “I should have been in that movie,” and I said, “I know! Why aren’t you there?”
Two missed appointments that the manager regrets, but you’d bet new ones were made a potential sequel…
