Indeed, we find it years after the events of the first one do not breath enjoying a happy life with Phoenix, an 11-year-old girl he adopted. We understand thathe has never been convicted of his past crimes. In a new break-in attempt, the little girl will be kidnapped, and he will do anything to find her. From executioner to hero.

This decision to place this character in this position raises questions. Specifically why monstrous crimes that man has committed in the past. When the film came out, we were able to discuss this topic with Fede Alvarez. Above all, he wanted viewers form their own opinion:

The first film is about a bad boy, who did terrible things and finally got away with it. We said to ourselves: if we make another one, we would like to understand what happened in his life after these events. Where is he at? Do you sleep at night? Does he have remorse? Does he realize who he is? And above all: will he pay for his past crimes? And to answer these questions we had to put him in the place of the protagonist.

We show our point of view only at the end of Don’t breathe 2. That is to say, she was served justice or paid for her crimes. The rest is up to the public.

As for the moral ambiguity surrounding the treatment of this character, Alvarez said he wanted to question the public :

If a character like him gets to a point where he loses everything and has to pay the ultimate price for what he’s done, how do we go about it? Will we pity him or will we spit on his grave instead? We don’t give the answer, it’s up to the public to invent it.
