The story of A piece
From the age of four, the mangaka Eiichiro Oda he is passionate about the world of piracy. This love for these sea brigands finally materialized in 1997 with the publication of the first chapter of his most popular work to date: A piece. Indeed, the manga is set in a fictional world where piracy is experiencing its best golden age. This is due to the last words of the famous Pirate King: Gol D. Roger.
Thus, before dying on the gallows, the latter encouraged all those who had come to witness his execution to go to sea to find his immense treasure called One Piece. Whoever finds it would not only enjoy an immense fortune but he will also be given the title of “King of the Pirates”.

It is in this context that we therefore follow the young Monkey D. Luffy, who in turn sails the ocean with the ultimate goal of recovering the One Piece and succeeding the legendary Roger. To achieve this, he then builds a solid crew during his adventures. However, he is not alone in his research.
A reference to the manga
Considered the successor of dragon ball (Oda never hides that he wants to say that Akira Toriyama’s work inspired him a lot), A piece it is now considered the greatest manga in history. With its 106 volumes, Japanese comics have sold over 516.5 million copies worldwide. A record when you know the manga is still being published. Above all, since 1999, an animated adaptation saw the light, increasing the popularity of its source material. Despite its thousands of episodes, the series has enjoyed millions of viewers for 24 years.
After the manga, an animated adaptation, various animated films and several video games, A piece now appears in the catalog of netflix in the form of a live action series. It was in 2017 that this crazy project was announced during the manga’s 20th anniversary commemoration. We learned that this live-action series was an American-Japanese production overseen by Kaji Production, Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha. Eiichiro Oda himself has announced his presence as executive producer and script consultant on the series.
From anime to live action
With a budget of 144 million dollars (for its first season only!), the A piece of Netflix torpedoed the record of game of Thrones or also The Last of Us. Suffice to say, the streaming site is a big believer in this series. However, in the live adaptations department of Japanese manga and anime, netflix has not often been acclaimed in recent years. On the contrary, the streaming service has suffered the wrath of a good number of subscribers due to atrocities like death Note or also The Zodiac Knights.

If the digital effects of the first trailer of the series have aroused rather encouraging reactions, the project has suffered some shocks after the catastrophic comebacks following the press screening. It must be said that by adapting such a heavy material, Netflix plays very big. For its first season, the series shouldn’t take too many risks focusing mainly on the encounter between Luffy and the different characters that will make up his crew.
However, you have to show yourself just as fun, entertaining and engaging compared to the manga and anime series. A piece it’s not just a universe where superpowered pirates fight each other. There are also dozens of subplots, ultra-charismatic characters, and a much deeper story than you might think.
In the cast of the series
As for the showrunners of A piecerespond to the name of Matt Owens and Steven Maeda. The former became known by working as a screenwriter for several Marvel series such as Luca Gabbia, Agents of the Shield or also The defenders. As for the second, it is a little better known for working on popular series of the 2000s AS Lost, CSI: Miami OR X files. In 2014 he distinguished himself by becoming showrunner of the short series Propeller (cancelled after two seasons).

But the important element for the public remains the casting. It is made up of little-known actors from the small and big screens. So it is for young people Inaki Godoy to those who have the onerous task of interpreting the joke Monkey D. Luffy. A very dangerous role when you know it the character has become one of the most popular in the history of Japanese manga and animation.
With him we find Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Gibson and Taz Skylar to interpret the members of Luffy’s crew: Nami, Zoro, Usopp and Sanji. Added to this is Vincent Regan as Garp, Vice Admiral of the Navy, Peter Gadiot as Red Shanks o Aidan Scott and Morgan Davies to play Helmepp and Kobby.
The first season of A piece consists of 10 episodes and will be discovered on August 31st.
