Ace Frehley’s biggest regret about Kiss

Ace Frehley’s biggest regret about Kiss

Guitarist left the band twice, in 1982 and 2002, and regrets not having participated in the recording of the album he would have liked to have made

Ace Frehleywho left us this Thursday, the 16th, said in general that he had no regrets. Even after leaving the Kiss Twice, in 1982 and 2002, the group’s original guitarist claimed to dispense with any regrets as a whole in his life.

He, however, admitted to regretting something that was not so decisive in his life, but that he would have liked to have done. Spaceman confessed that I wish I had participated recording of Creatures of the Night (1982), tenth studio album by the band that made it famous.

Frehley is credited for the album in question and even appeared on the cover, as well as in the first promotional events. However, he doesn’t play: the guitars were recorded by Vinnie Vincent (who would be chosen as his official replacement), Robben Ford, Steve Farris and Adam Mitchellas well as the vocalist Paul Stanley. Interestingly, this was the work that brought Kiss to Brazil on tour for the first time, in 1983.

In a 2016 interview with journalist Eddie Trunk, Ace mentioned that his desire to participate in Creatures This happened because this work had a heavy sound, oriented towards hard rock and even flirting with heavy metal. The direct predecessor in the catalogue, Music from The Elder (1981), sounded light and approached progressive. And before that, the band absorbed influence from disco music in Dynasty (1979) and Unmasked (1980). Nothing rock’n’roll, right?

Frehley said:

“I think Creatures a good record. It was the album I wish I had recorded, instead of Music from The Elder. During recordings of The ElderI insisted Paul [Stanley, voz/guitarra], Gene [Simmons, voz/baixo] and BobEzrin [produtor] that it was the wrong album at the wrong time. We should have made a heavy hard rock record. It was what the fans wanted and expected.”

The original guitarist even puffed out his chest to say that he predicted the fiasco of Music from The Elder. It is one of the most criticized albums in Kiss’ history and one of the rare albums not to achieve a gold record in the United States.

“Everyone ignored me. And we know what happened and how The Elder was received.”

Why Ace Frehley is on the cover of Creatures of the Night

Still during the interview, Ace Frehley explained why he agreed to participate in the cover and promotional events of Creatures of the Nightdespite having already left the band at that time. The guitarist had made an agreement with his former colleagues.

“I promised Paul and Gene that I would fulfill my obligations to promote the record. It’s what professional musicians do.”

Frehley — who left the group for the first time in 1982 due to problems with drug addiction and disagreements with Simmons and Stanley — went on to re-record “Rock And Roll Hell”one of the tracks Creatures of the Nightin covers work Origins Vol. 1 (2016). Listen below.

About Kiss’ original guitarist

Born April 27, 1951, Paul Daniel “Ace” Frehley He started playing guitar at age 13 and grew up in a musical family. In his youth, he was part of several local bands while juggling jobs as a postman, taxi driver and delivery boy.

In 1972, he responded to an advertisement for a guitarist in a new band. It was selected by Paul Stanley (voice and guitar), Gene Simmons (voice and bass) and Peter Criss (drums) after a curious audition in which he appeared “poorly dressed”, according to his colleagues, but surprised with his performance.

He joined the group that adopted the name Kiss in 1973. Frehley created the persona Spaceman (also Space Ace), painting silver stars on his eyes. The band’s double lightning bolt logo is also his.

Ace initially remained in the lineup until 1982, when, amid problems with drug addiction and conflicts with Stanley and Simmons, he left the group.

After leaving Kiss, he formed Frehley’s Cometwith which he released two albums, and began a solo career. In 1996 he returned to the masked band for a reunion tour, remaining until 2002.

Frehley was introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 as a member of Kiss. He was credited for 11 of the group’s studio albums, although he did not play on one (Creatures of the Night1982) and its presence in another (Psycho Circus1998) is limited to just a few tracks. He also released eight studio albums as a solo artist.
