Dune: Denis Villeneuve is already working on a third film

Denis Villeneuve wants a trilogy for Dunes

In 2021, viewers find out a new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s colossal work signed Denis Villeneuve (prisoners, First contact). Delivered by a monstrous cast led by Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac, Dunes recounts the attack of the Harkonnen barony on the planet Arrakis to appropriate the reserves of “Spice”, a rare drug with multiple virtues which allows in particular to prolong human life. This war also marks the rise of young Paul, heir to House Atreides.

Dune: second part should focus on the hero’s alliance with the Fremen, indigenous people of Arrakis who live in the desert. Together they will have to fight against the Harkonnens and the forces of Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken). Paul will therefore be faced with a dilemma: choosing between his great love Chani (Zendaya) and the fate of his planet, and more generally of the universe. A second part that will introduce new characters embodied by Florence Pugh, Austin Butler or Léa Seydoux. After the success of the first work, which collected more than $402 million in worldwide revenue in a complicated context linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, Dune: second part is one of the most anticipated films of the moment, whose release has just been postponed to March 2024 due to the Hollywood strike.

An adaptation of Messiah of the Dunes

The feature film has every chance of being a success and thus of convincing Warner Bros. to allow Denis Villeneuve to produce a third part. The director already has ideas for the sequel and assures it “it would be a dream to be able to make a trilogy”as he said Empire. The director said he started doing it put “a few words on paper”. He added that this third part will be based on Dune Messiahsequel to Frank Herbert’s first novel dedicated to the universe:

Frank Herbert wrote Dune Messiah in reaction to people seeing Paul Atreides as a hero. Which is not what we wanted to do. My adaptation is closer to this idea, which is actually a warning.

Dune Messiah confronts Paul Atreides with terrible new trials and offers a true conclusion to the hero epic. Reason why Denis Villeneuve would stop at Dunes: third part if he had the opportunity to carry out this project. So all that remains is to hope so Dune: second partexpected for March 13, 2024 in France, is a success in darkened rooms.
