Tron: Ares had a disappointing reception in theaters
Directed by Joachim Rønning, Tron: Ares is the third installment of a franchise that has taken its time between each of its films. After a first work released in 1982 and a second in 2010, the third arrived in French cinemas on 10 October. In this new story, a being with artificial intelligence appears in the human world with the aim of completing a dangerous mission.
The results ofAres for its first weekend in theaters were below expectations. As explained recently, the feature film only collected $33.5 million in North America and 27 million internationally. This is a total of approx 60 million. Gold, Disney spent 180 million on its production and many more millions (the exact figure is not known) for its marketing.
The end of the saga at the cinema?
With the poor reception ofAres, the future of the franchise launched in 1982 was in doubtjust a few days after the release of the feature film. And according to the information of The Hollywood journalist, Disney seems to have already made its decision on the topic.

The media just dedicated an article questioning the ability of Jared Leto (headliner ofAres) to exercise a franchise. And according to sources interviewed by the media for this article, the saga Tron “he will probably retire from the big screen”.
“You could have had Ryan Gosling, it wouldn’t have worked”
Disney therefore seems to have made the decision to bury the saga. And according to one of the sources interviewed by The Hollywood journalistIt’s not Jared Leto’s fault. In his own words: “You could have had Ryan Gosling, it wouldn’t have worked”. Because this source says so “No one asked for this reboot. If you say ‘Tron: Ares is good, we just needed a different actor,’ you’re deluding yourself.”.
Tron: Ares however, it still has several weeks in theaters to improve its box office results. But it’s unlikely to raise enough money for Disney to change its mind about the future of the franchise.
As for Jared Leto, he is now hoping for a better reception for his next film. The actor will return The Lords of the Universewhich should come out at the beginning of June 2026. He will play there the antagonist Skeletor.
