But when a live action adaptation comes to Netflix, one question arises: can we enjoy the series? A piece without being a fan? During this first season, the hero will gather mostly a small crew with him. Very different personalities (Nami, Zoro, Usopp, Sanji) who, together with Luffy, will find a better meaning in their lives and form a small family.

Both from the world presented and these captivating characters, A piece manages to convince and interest. Especially since the series chooses to go back to each other’s past with flashbacks related to what happens to the now adult heroes.

Furthermore, it must be admitted that Netflix has put the means to adapt the work in real footage. The scenery and digital effects to represent different cities or ships are more than right. But the series A piece unfortunately remains a television productmade for the small screen. And the problem is that it shows.

An uninspired result

It’s in it A piece a staging devoid of any creative idea. With its means, Netflix could have made a concrete proposal. Or at least offer a simple but effective implementation. But as soon as we step back and focus on the image, visual poverty is evident. In fact, one often has the sensation of witnessing a succession of conversations between the characters, with a fixed camera and dubious framing. attest to this the countless dirty close-ups on faces interpreters that often make no sense.

It may seem like a detail. But it’s this camera placement that makes some sequences feel like fan art rather than a big production Pirates of the Caribbean. The comparison with the films produced by Disney is not trivial. It is by comparing them that one can easily feel this visual weakness of A piecedespite the good intentions put into the sets and costumes.

More, unfortunately the cast is rather uneven. A piece it has a lot of character. But not everyone is so well embodied. Inaki Godoy, Emily Rudd and Mackenyuwho respectively voice Luffy, Nami and Zorro and are the first main characters introduced in the series, fare better.

Both the actors and the actress are highlights of the show. The very good Iñaki Godoy manages to make Luffy fun without being too annoying. Mackenyu imposes himself with his face closed and with his three sabers. And Emily Rudd has a real, touching, funny, mysterious presence.

Troubled secondary roles

Sadly the same cannot be said of the rest of the cast. The vast majority of supporting roles did this part economic that might be feared. The fault of uncharismatic artists and, again, to the poor art direction and staging that fails to adequately showcase them.
