So far, so good: according to the technicians, shooting the Nawell Madani series was hell

until now everything is fine : the many hats by Nawell Madani

In April 2023 it arrives on Netflix So far, so gooda series on which Nawell Madani deals the roles of showrunner, co-writer, director, co-producer and lead actress. A multiplicity of hats that he didn’t necessarily want, as he explained to us during the Series Mania Festival in March 2022:

I didn’t necessarily want to play it. I wanted to challenge myself and make a series. But Netflix hasn’t seen anyone other than me to play this character, because it looks so much like me. So I agreed. At one point, I really wanted to give up on this idea because I had too many hats. (…) But I wasn’t given the choice of playing Fara.

During this interview, Nawell Madani also states that the filming, which began a few weeks after the birth and spread over 70 days, was “‘difficult’ and that he had ‘really underrated the pace of a series’. In a long survey conducted by MediapartMany technicians have recounted the hellish experience that gave birth to this program co-produced by the companies Elephant and Black Barbie and broadcast by Netflix. One interviewee states at the end of this file:

Netflix left all the powers to Nawell, who was tired but also inexperienced to fill all these positions. They put her there because she’s famous, because she has millions of subscribers, but she didn’t have the back, and we paid the price.

Nervous breakdowns, insults and post-traumatic stress

Mediapart revealed several incidents from the production in its investigation, including a dangerous and unplanned situation in which an actress who did not have a driver’s license had to drive for several minutes with several other members in the vehicle, including Nawell Madani and a technician from the sound that had not been warned in advance. On condition of anonymity, witnesses also report extremely loud and tense filming, characterized by incessant screams for several weeksas well as regular and grueling organizational changes.

A famous person, Eliane, assures that “these shootings have been nothing but great suffering.” Image team member, whose name has been changed, says Lou have been suffering from “post-traumatic stress” since the end of production according to his psychologist. Sound engineer, Yann recalls the aggressive atmosphere that reigned on the set:

These shots transformed us. For all there was a time when we did not recognize each other because we were aggressive or unpleasant due to this permanent tension.

He specified that “the screams were constant” and that he was leaving “Working the Knot in Your Stomach Every Day”. From the technicians to the actors, no one seems to be spared even if Kahina Carina, interpreter of Souhila, says that “the shooting went very well, in normal and completely professional conditions”. Carima Amarouche, who plays Yasmina in the programme, assures her that she has “nothing in particular to witness”.

Versions that differ from those of many technicians. Éliane returns, for example, to an incident that occurred on the first day of filming, January 26, 2022. Having to show up naked in the shower, Nawell Madani is then “very embarrassed” according to the witness. A script by her reassures her and the director replies, referring to her sexual orientation in front of the rest of the crew:

Yes, but you’re saying that because you want to lick my pussy.

A “hallucinating” scene for Maëlle, which André report on the Netflix harassment hotline after being informed. Apparently he’s not the only one sharing alerts via this device but, according to André, these don’t help the overall situation. Later Nawell Madani talks about the script by phone, “takes refuge in humor and ends up apologizing”.

Several crew members stopped filming

In April 2022, a Netflix contact went to the set, following the departure of several team members, including that of the production manager and general manager. This recalls the streaming giant’s commitments, including “respecting the quality of working conditions”, and its mission is to ensure their application. According to Eliane “he’s not very involved”. Arthur believes that such a device “sometimes drives people to testify for a little while,” although he doesn’t dispute its usefulness.

When the referent arrived, Guillaume Renouil, producer of the Elephant, admitted that this had happened “sufficiently problematic, serious and inappropriate facts” during the first months of filming So far, so good. This observation gave rise to “a conversation” between the production company Nawell Madani and Netflix with the aim of calming and improving the situation, as he explained to the whole team on April 26, 2022. “fantastic job” done by all the collaborators are immediately greeted.

A few minutes later, Nawell Madani assures that he is “super happy” to be present, evokes the “painful” shooting, the “enormous” pressure she is under and hopes that the team members are “happy to see their names in the headlines tail”. According to several witnesses the showrunner is regularly on the edges and with tears during productionexhausted and especially having to deal with missing her daughter.

At the end of the inspection, Jean-Pierre, a member of the decorating group, stated that “the pace of work for the series broadcast on the platforms is very intensethe pace is unsustainable.” In this regard, Netflix claims to Mediapart that today no longer starts projects so quickly.
