Inside : a demon in the jar
Bishal Dutta’s first feature film, Inside allows terror-seeking viewers to experience a new demon in 2023 after the recent one Insidious: The Red Door, The Vatican Exorcist, The Demon’s Grip, The devil’s prey OR The handand while waiting The Nun: The Curse of Saint Lucia AND The Exorcist: Devotion. It is therefore difficult to stand out in this horrible sub-genre and the film fails to do that in its admittedly sad introductory scene, which should come as no surprise to regulars.

The hand – a terrible unexpected surprise
Inside opens in the sinister basement of a house where an unfortunate one is strangely consumed from within. The film then introduces Samidha (Megan Suri), a quiet high school student who witnesses a terrifying event in her institution. After being away from her for several years, her childhood friend Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) comes to her for help. Distressed and rejected by all of her other peers, the teenager wears constantly a strange jar from which above all does not want to part.

Not taking Tamira’s fear seriously, Samidha accidentally drops the container, releasing a terrifying creature. After attacking her friend, this fearsome demon gives the heroine hell.
A terrifying creature
Disturbing warnings, frightening visions, relatives who don’t believe in a real threat and end up paying the price… Inside meets the specified specifications and he never departs from it until the final battle against the Pishach, demon of Hindu mythology. The film’s main singularity comes from this flesh-eating monster, which gnaws at the soul of its prey by feeding on their sadness and dark thoughts.

An abominable creature that reveals itself belatedly but whose design attracts attention, its body being made up notably of the bruised faces of its victims. It also offers its luminous gaze in the night beautiful cold sweats, but his most successful appearance is probably when he pursues Joyce (Betty Gabriel), Samidha’s teacher who dared to doubt his existence. In the corridors of the high school, the invisible Pishach enjoys mistreating and torturing her, with Bishal Dutta finally infusing real energy into her acting after an all too long and repetitive exposure.
Evoked in the last act, the myth of the Pishach is not studied enough to impose the feature film as an original proposal. Apart from this aspect, Inside reveals a traditional family conflict, an endearing heroine who does not stand out within an often redundant genre and adventures that follow each other in an applied, and therefore too wise way. The film is far from unpleasant, but unfortunately too classic.
Inside it is to be discovered in cinemas from 6 September 2023.
