Why “Hacks” Star Hannah Einbinder Prefers Red Carpet Costumes and Tuxedos

Actress and comedian Hannah Einbinder was the lead star of the HBO Max comedy series. tricksShe deserved an Emmy nomination for her role as Ava Daniels, the aimless young bisexual comedian who plays with the absurd and sassy Las Vegas comic strip for Deborah Vance (Gene Smart). With the success of the Emmy-winning comedy (which won three trophies in the fall, including one for Smart), the 27-year-old from Los Angeles suddenly found himself in an unfamiliar area: the red carpet.

While working with stylist Kevin Michael Erickson, Einbinder elevated his everyday look (vintage t-shirts, jeans, black Doc Martens) to the A-lister style, appearing most often in costumes and cigarettes. “I was lucky to work with a team completely made of stone. [Ericson, Molly Greenwald and Brian Fisher] Because of the glamor and style and as a result, I’ve always looked and felt amazing when it comes to how I want to dress and present myself,” said the actor, who admits to being bisexual. where I could use what I wanted.”

How would you describe your style on the red carpet?

Retailer, bespoke and gentlemanly.

While on the red carpet, you often switch between outfits and dresses. How did you decide which one to use?

For me personally, there is incredible protection in wearing costumes. I feel very confident in this type of outfit. It was an ongoing conversation with my stylist, who is the most amazing employee of this very fun and new to me art form that is trending. This conversation always revolves around what it’s like to be safe and what it means to cross a personal boundary. And that’s good. Every time I wear a dress, I’m drawn to a look that still seems to have power.

When you’re not on the mat, how do you carry it? Do you still prefer a more structured look?

The truth is, when I’m not on the rug, I’m on the couch. (laughs.) My everyday style got a lot better working with Kevin, but since I started high school I’ve been wearing the same thing: Doc Martens, vintage black jeans, T-shirt and flannel. Many versions of the coat with this base layer. Since working with Kevin, I’ve gotten more used to pants, tailored pants, and prints. It varies between salon costumes – I freeze as much as I can – and a more assembled version that I always wear.

What have you learned about fashion after walking so many red carpets?

It’s my instinct as a Los Angeles native to dress completely in black. Later today, I have an FYC event with the creators and Jean [Smart]And I’m wearing the orange, blue and beige Alexandre Vauthier suit. If you asked me two years ago if I felt confident about it, I would have said no. Kevin really helped me get to this point where I now have a harder time understanding fashion theory, colors and silhouettes. I know what I like and what works for me, and I’ve gotten to the point where I’m in absolutely everything. It was really wonderful to feel like, “Oh, I can use this.”

Would you say Ava style tricks And like you? Have you ever walked in and seen a costume and thought, “I want to take it home”?

For the first season, I brought some of her clothes. [to set]. In the pilot, Ava wears a beige flannel shirt and a vintage black Levi’s, both mine. But I love her style. I think it’s a mix of that [co-creators Jen Statsky and Lucia Aniello] wear. There were a few days when I came to do the wardrobe, Jenny, Lucia and Ava are all dressed very similarly, which I love because I feel like they gave that direction themselves. I support your style in my daily life.

Who is your ultimate style icon?

Fren Lebowitz. It’s so hot, it’s crazy.

Have you ever seen Jean Smart on the red carpet and thought, “Wow, I want to wear this”?

His look at the Critics’ Choice award was incredible. It was a Valentino, white top and lined skirt – I couldn’t [pull that off], Any time. She had really nice 60s style hair at the bottom, she was so adorable.

What show have you been doing lately?

[HBO Max’s] designed for love. Kristin Milliot is one of the hottest actresses today. I enjoyed the first season, but what he does in the second season is amazing. There’s a phase where he has to play a different version of himself and it’s just masterful.
