With The kissing booth, The lovebirds, Vacation, Little tricks, Always be my maybe OR Love in the Villa, Netflix has partly specialized in the distribution of romantic comedies. The first minutes of The statistical probability of love at first sight they presage yet another anecdotal production, unveiled at the beginning of the school year to allow the streaming giant’s subscribers to relax at the time of the late drop in temperatures.
Love in the Villa: what is this Netflix romantic comedy?
Based on the novel of the same name by Jennifer E. Smith, the film begins in a New York airport, an impersonal place of transition that heroine Hadley (Haley Lu Richardson) likens to purgatory. A purgatory where miracles are possible. While she has just missed her flight to London, where she has to attend the second wedding of her father Andrew (Rob Delaney), the young she meets Oliver (Ben Hardy).
They immediately hit it off and, by another happy coincidence, found themselves next to each other on the plane. But after landing in the English capital, Hadney and Oliver are separated by the crowd and they have no choice but to go their separate ways, without having been able to exchange telephone numbers. However, if they truly believe they are meant for each other, the universe might be able to lend them a helping hand…
A film that is better than its French title
Netflix subscribers who closely follow the platform’s romantic programs have a good chance of being won over by them The statistical probability of love at first sight, a much catchier comedy than its long French title. If the project struggles a lot to mask its industrial side, which manifests itself through poor and limited settings or in the traditional shots of aerial illustrations of London, it owes a lot to alchemy between the talented Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus, After Yang) and Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody, 6 Underground).
If their meeting takes place in an extremely conventional environment, their love at first sight is felt and the director Vanessa Caswill then plays very well with the desire to see them reunited. To do this, she exploits their cracks, their doubts and the complicated trials they go through, from which they are born surprisingly touching sequences, where sadness replaces the permanent wonder and superficiality of countless romantic comedies. The charm of the film therefore lies in its way of focusing on the birth of a love story before putting it aside to focus on Hadley and Ben’s family problems.
Director it also takes on the totally unrealistic side of the genredestiny personified and embodied by Jameela Jamil (The good place) constantly intervening to bring Hadley and Oliver closer together. The film thus confirms itself as a declared fairy tale, which features two captivating and never annoying characters. Which obviously doesn’t make it an original film, but the tenderness and romance work.
