Non-existent placeclaustrophobia in an aquatic environment
Available on the Netflix platform from September 29th survival Spanish Non-existent place has everything you need to succeed. A strong story, that of a pregnant refugee, Mia, locked in a container in the middle of the ocean, developed from a dystopia in which fascist regimes are in power. Furthermore, a very diligent direction by Albert Pintó and a very convincing artistic direction in describing Mia’s sensations. And to interpret this, one of the most important Spanish actresses offers her an amazing performance : Anna Castello.

Non-existent place it is a pure thriller and a high-level production from the Spanish film industry, calibrated to offer maximum sensations. Without forgetting, however, the treatment or, at least, the suggestion of similar themes the migration crisis and motherhood in precarious situations. The author of the story was inspired by the testimonies of migrants
The scenario of Non-existent place was written by a team of four: Teresa de Rosendo, Seanne Winslow, Ernest Riera and Indiana Lista. And it was the latter who first wrote the original story of Non-existent place. In a long interview given to PúblicoAlbert Pintó thus explains from which reality the scenario was conceived.
Indiana knew of two Mexican migrants trying to cross the border, crammed into shipping containers and trucks. We interviewed them and it was heartbreaking to hear the stories of people risking their lives, with temperatures above 40 degrees and barely a bottle of water to make the journey. The human trafficking routes in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua are well documented, but in our country we are also well aware of the tragedy of the sinking of small boats. It’s important to remember that even if it doesn’t seem to concern us today, in another context it could concern any of us.
So, and fortunately, Mia’s particular story is pure invention. But it is the result of a fictitious combination of real facts, and Mia’s imprisonment obviously resembles that of migrants crammed into containers transported by trucks. Public opinion still has it in mind the tragedies that occurred in England in 2020 and in Texas in 2022where dozens of migrants died in overheated or non-oxygenated containers.
Furthermore, Albert Pintó explained that he absolutely wanted maximum realism, in the wake of the cinema of the 70s and 80s in which the illusion was rendered by practical effects.
I wanted the story to feel authentic, I was constantly obsessed with not “embellishing” it in the studio and, halfway through filming, we went to shoot at sea.
