The Deep House: What is this French horror film?
As its name absolutely does not indicate, The Deep House it’s really a French genre film. Released in theaters in summer 2021, the feature film directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, a couple already accustomed to horror (Inside, Skinface, In the eyes of the living), takes place largely underwater.
The plot follows a passionate young American coupleurbex, a discipline that leads its enthusiasts to explore abandoned, sometimes dangerous places. Always looking for the most unusual places, this time they decide to dive to the bottom of an artificial lake in the south of France, to explore a supposedly haunted submerged house. But once beneath the surface, the place seems to close in on them and they discover a place full of dark stories…
In the casting of the film we could find Camille Rowe (definitely used to stories about water, later Under the influence) and James Jagger.

A hit on Netflix abroad
The Deep House was released in French theaters on June 30, 2021, a month after the reopening of theaters following the health crisis. After just four weeks of operation and just 200,000 viewers, the horror film is off the posters. But its recent arrival on Netflix abroad has given it a second life and great success with a global audience.
Therefore, the feature film, which was actually shot under water, unites four million hours of viewingand went up into the Netflix’s global top 10. It was especially popular in South America and ranked first among the best films in Argentina, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.
It is not the first time that a French film that was not very successful at the cinema has had a second life in the world thanks to Netflix. This had been the case, for example, with comedy Spoiled putrid with Gérard Jugnot which had achieved surprise success all over the world thanks to the streaming platform.
