Matthew McConaugheyspoke again about the relationship between his mother, Kay McConaugheyand the wife, Camila Alvesin an episode of Whine Downpodcast presented by Jana Kramer. “My family — part of Camila and so do I — we recognize the value of a sense of humor and comedy,” said the actor.

Not all the jokes from the Rust performer’s mother in True Detective were taken as a joke by fans or even by Camila. He acknowledged that “what tickles us can leave wounds on others”, but assured that his wife does not hold grudges against her mother-in-law.

“She tested my feelings and tested the woman I have feelings for. Overall, that’s pretty cool, actually,” he said. To the ET Canada, Matthew explained his family dynamics: “My family is good at rites of passage and initiation, and you don’t join the family McConaughey so easily.”

“We tested you. My family, we wait patiently, we make you cry and then we take you and make you your favorite drink. […] So, there are initiations, rites of passage that my family always enjoys,” he added.

Alves revealed that, in the past, she really felt tested by her mother-in-law. “She called me all the names of her ex-girlfriends. MatthewI started speaking bad Spanish, to belittle myself and all that kind of thing,” he said in an interview with the podcast Biscuits & Jam (via People).
