Black phone was a major success at the box office, grossing more than $160 million for a minimum budget estimated at $18 million. We could therefore expect a sequel to see the light. Scott Derrickson spoke about this possibility (via Comicbook.com), underlining a sine qua non condition : the return of Ethan Hawke. For Derrickson, Hawke is a central element of the franchise, and it is unthinkable to imagine a sequel without his presence:

It’s not a certainty, but if it becomes concrete you’ll be the first to know. I can tell you this: I wouldn’t make a sequel to ‘Black Phone’ without Ethan. I don’t see the point in doing it without him.

If a sequel were to see the light, several paths would be possible. One of those would be to further explore Hawke’s character through a prequel. This new chapter could focus on the character’s murderous beginnings, offering information on the children he kidnapped, who play a crucial role in the first film. This approach would allow us to learn more about his motivations and his past, and above all it would allow us to bring the actor back to life.
