The character’s interpreter, Anna Gunn, suffered several attacks in real life for participating in the five seasons of Breaking Bad
Even with great importance in the history of television in the United States, Breaking Bad part of the fan base is quite toxic, especially when it comes to Skyler WhiteInterpreted by Anna Gunn. The character is quite hostile and the actress herself was attacked by “fans.” Second Vince Gilligancreator of the series, this whole hate movement “never made sense.”
During an interview with Varietythe writer and director of the series commented how Skyler was villainized for speaking out against the criminal activities of Walter Whiteplayed by Bryan Cranston. Even though she was an accomplice at times, she was one of the long list of victims of the drug and money empire of Heisenberg.
“Anna was screwed. God bless the fans – they’re the only reason we’re still here a decade later – but there was a strange level of animosity directed at the character, which eventually rubbed off on Anna herself. Anna Gunn,” he stated Gilligan. “It never made sense to me.”
In retrospect, the premise of the series is a failed guy who gets it wrong from all sides: mistreated by his wife, his son, his students and his boss. But as the series progresses, it becomes clear that Skyler is a great partner for walterbut he’s not even close to a good partner for her.
Then, he recalled decisions he made Skyler take, but this turned completely against Gunnwhich suffered reprisals from part of the public.
“At one point, she has her house invaded by masked men. The saddest thing for me is when she starts to help walter laundering the money — but I wouldn’t change that. I still feel bad about Anna dealing with the heaviest part. I don’t know what we could have done differently,” she said.
If I could, I would wave a magic wand to change people’s reactions back there. Anna is such a good actress and such a smart, wonderful person. She deserved none of this.
