Consentfrom novel to film
In cinemas onwards October 11, 2023, Consent is Vanessa Filho’s adaptation of Vanessa Springora’s book published in 2020. This book is the terrible autobiographical account of a relationship in the mid-1980s between a famous fifty-year-old writer, Gabriel Matzneff, and a 14-year-old girl, Vanessa. The story of an influence, the story of an era and a society which, under the guise of “unbridled enjoyment”, confused liberation of customs and pedophilia. Consent it is a true nightmare story, which director Vanessa Filho adapted for the cinema with a direct and strong gesture.

To play the young Vanessa from the age of 13, Kim Higelin was chosen. And it is Jean-Paul Rouve who plays the writer Gabriel Matzneff, admitted pedophile for whom the French literary world has long since rolled out the red carpet, complacently turning a blind eye to the horror of his behavior. In the show Nice gesture by Pierre Lescure on 8 October 2023, the actor told how he lived this experience and this role, which he immediately and without surprises places in the rare category of these characters we can neither love nor understand. He mentioned one sequence in particular, which in the film is not a violent sequence and might even seem anecdotal, but which was unbearable for him to play.
Jean-Paul Rouve recounts a tough experience
The most difficult moment is a moment in the film, I am… Kim Higelin, who plays Vanessa, fortunately because it would have been even more difficult to shoot it, she is 22 years old, she is a young woman, this is not a teenager. At one point we’re shooting a scene where I take the bus. She sees me, she sees me with another girl. Where do I catch the bus with this girl. And this little girl, before shooting, you know, before “engine”, she discusses herself, she is normal. And the little girl is 14 years old, she’s a little girl. As we chatted, I told him about my son… There you have it. In short, “engine”! Tac, let’s turn. And then Vanessa (the director, ed.) said to me: “Here, put your hand on his cheek”.
But you don’t know what it was like to do it! It’s worse than anything I shot in the movie! Because there I was with a… I was with a young woman… A young girl! A child! A 14 year old boy. And I had to turn it around. And I said to myself: “Did she do it like this…? Like this?” And that was the gesture… The worst gesture I had to make in this movie was that. The most violent internally.
As Jean-Paul Rouve points out, playing this influence and this distortion of consensus with Kim Higelin was one thing, made possible by the maturity of the actress who is not a teenager and who therefore had the necessary and sufficient perspective. But the time came to play Gabriel Matzneff with another, much younger, actress at his disposal the age of this individual’s victimsso it was another, which profoundly marked the actor.
