Since its launch in 2012 The Avengers, Thanos dominated the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the main antagonist of what we now know as The Infinity Saga. James Brolin first played the Mad Titan in Guardians of the Galaxybut it was inside Avengers: Infinity War Yes ending of the Avengers where the character was center stage. Thanos became one of Brolin’s most popular roles and the actor reflected on his time playing the “700-pound purple dude” while interviewing himself. Yes, you read that correctly.
Josh Brolin was supposed to have a chat with Jeremy Renner, aka Clint Barton / Hawkeye of the MCU, to VarietyActors upon actors. However, Renner didn’t show up at the last minute for the segment, so instead of canceling it out entirely, Brolin decided to follow Thanos’ words at the end of the episode. The Avengers: Age of Ultron: “Very well, I’ll do it myself.” When Brolin concluded his interview by asking how he reacted when asked to play Thanos, here’s what Brolin told Brolin:
Thanos, Thanos, Thanos. It was a great deal for me. When you have my kind of seriousness, I understand why they say, “This guy might give weight to the purple guy,” but I didn’t get it at first. I’ve always described him doing black box theater in New York in the 70’s or something. And what a lot of people don’t know is that when they came to see me it was for an apparition, you know? It was just a small thing in Infinity War, and I impressed everyone so much that they ended up making two movies. It was a top notch performance. We had high hopes of being nominated for it, but the Marvel stuff hasn’t been nominated yet. But if they did, I think we would. Are you sleeping? Should I wake him up?
This is an outstanding answer Josh Brolin gave to Josh Brolin’s question. Unfortunately, the fact that he was considering playing Thanos apparently put the interviewer to sleep, so maybe he should have summarized his thoughts about him more succinctly. However, I think we can all agree that Brolin played a role he originally played as a cameo and proceeded to throw him out of the park with the successful combination of Avengers: Infinity War Yes ending of the Avengers. As for the interview as a whole, I hope Brolin gets a chance to chat with Brolin again like this at some point … ok, that’s enough.
After Damon Poitier briefly played Thanos The AvengersJosh Brolin took on the character for Guardians of the Galaxy, where he is seen as the benefactor of Ronan the Accuser, although the fanatic Kree later betrays the Mad Titan after obtaining the Power Stone. Between that and Loki’s final defeat in the Battle of New York The Avengers: Age of UltronThanos decided to personally undertake the search for the Infinity Stones and ultimately accomplished his mission Avengers: Infinity War. From there, he proceeded to wipe out half of all life in the universe, then destroyed the Infinity Stones using his own power so that no one could undo his genocide.
While the original Thanos was beheaded by Thor at the beginning of ending of the Avengers, this film then brought back an old version of Thanos from an alternate timeline to try to destroy all of reality to remake it in his own image. This Thanos met his death when Tony Stark sacrificed his life to defeat the “700 Pound Purple Man” and his army with the Infinity Stones acquired by the Infinity Stones. Josh Brolin then played Thanos for an episode of What if …?, and with the fully established Multiverse MCU, there’s still a slim chance we might see another alternate version of the character. For now, however, his time to shine in live action has come and gone.
Josh Brolin recently starred in the Amazon series outdoor beachand is ready to repeat Gurney Halleck Dune: second part, which he specifically asked his press officer to post on IMDB a few months ago.
