Israel-Hamas war: Sean Penn’s new series deprived of preview

Sean Penn’s series on standby

While the satirical series TAKEN produced by Sean Penn, who was also chosen for his role, has already begun its broadcast in Australia on September 28, it was announced that it will cancel its presence at MIPCOM (international audiovisual content and co-production market), which is held in Cannes from 16 to 19 October 2023. A decision that the Fremantle company, producer of the series, has taken towards the war between Israel and Hamashe said after the large-scale military operation launched by the terrorist group on October 7 on Israeli territory.

In light of the current situation in Israel, we have made the decision not to show “C*A*U*G*H*T” at MIPCOM this year. At this time, our hearts and minds are with our colleagues and partners in Israel, as well as with all those affected.

Sean Penn was scheduled to be present at MIPCOM for the presentation of the series and its promotion, as well as actor Matthew Fox and creator, writer and director Kick Gurry.

A celebrity satire with a geopolitical backdrop

TAKEN tells the story, in six episodes, of four not-so-smart Australian soldiers (Lincoln Younes, Kick Gurry, Ben O’Toole and Alexander England) on an infiltration mission in a war-torn country. Mistaken for Americans, they are captured and become celebrities after a video showing them as hostages becomes a huge viral phenomenon.

Following the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation launched by Hamas, Israel launched the retaliatory operation “Iron Sword” and placed a total siege on the Gaza Strip. At that time, the overall death toll amounted to over 1,600 dead and several thousand injured. Particularly worrying situation dozens of hostages still remain in the hands of Hamas forces. Of which it is “probable” according to US President Joe Biden who, and among many other nationalities, some are American citizens.

The presentation and promotion of Sean Penn’s satirical series at MIPCOM, in such a situation, was therefore logically deemed irrelevant.
