A Hollywood star has died

American actress Piper Laurie, best known for her film roles in The scammer in 1961, in Carrie at the Devil’s Ball in 1976 and in The children of silence in 1986, died October 14, 2023 in Los Angeles. He was 91 years old.

Born in Detroit on January 22, 1932, she was only 17 years old when she landed her first Hollywood role in He knowsa comedy directed by Alexander Hall and in which he stars alongside the film’s star Ronald Reagan. Born Rosetta Jacobs, she then changed her name to Piper Laurie, and met other then-unknown actors and actresses at Universal Studios such as Julie Adams, Rock Hudson, and Tony Curtis. She then continued with other roles in films such as The milkman, Francesco goes to the races, Ali Baba’s son OR The ballerina and the millionaire.

But by the mid-1950s, tired of not getting important roles, she moved New York where he studied theater and worked for television.

Oscar nominations

It was in 1961 that she returned to Hollywood through the front door, playing Paul Newman’s girlfriend The scammer. This role earned him a nomination the Oscar for best actress in 1962. But this did not convince Piper Laurie to insist on the big screen, for which offers were rare. She married the critic Joe Morgenstern and they settled together in Woodstock, near New York.

She appears in some episodes of the series in the following years, but it is in 1976 that we find her in the foreground, in the film Carrie at the Devil’s Ball by Brian De Palma. She plays Margaret White, Carrie’s bigoted mother. The film was a success and her performance earned her a nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Returning to the big screen, Piper Laurie stood out again in 1986 for her role in The children of silence by Randa Haines, with a new assignment in 1987 toOscar for best supporting actress.

The 1990s were an opportunity for her to shine on television with the role of Catherine Packard Martell Twin peaksand at the cinema in Dario Argento’s first American film Traumain 1993. She is also remembered in Crossing guard by Sean Penn and in The faculty by Robert Rodriguez. His portrayal of him in the David Lynch series earned him 1991 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.
