Disney: the modernization of classics in live action divides the French public

Disney and the madness of live remakes

For several years, Disney has undertaken live-action adaptations of its classic cartoons. And the recipe hits the mark. In fact, several films it grossed a lot at the global box officeAS The Lion King, The beauty and the BeastOR The Jungle Book. However, recent films have sparked controversy due to Disney’s choices to make them more inclusive The little Mermaid, Peter Pan and Wendy or the future remake of Snow White (scheduled for next March).

More than 60% of French people oppose modern adaptations of the classics

A recent survey conducted by Ifop/Flashs, in collaboration with the agency “Voyage avec nous” (via Point), underlined the French opinion on the subject. According to this study, 62% of people interviewed in France (more than a thousand) are against the adaptation of Disney classics to contemporary social values.

This opposition is not only due to nostalgia for the original films, but also a reluctance to see these tales modified to correspond to current themes. It’s worth noting that this figure is similar to a recent survey conducted in the United States, where 61% of respondents said they were against modern adaptations of classics.

A dominant conservatism

Movies like The little Mermaid, Snow White AND Peter Pan and Wendy have been at the center of heated debates. For example, the announcement that Snow White’s dwarfs would be replaced by magical creatures in the 2024 adaptation sparked opposition from 77% of French people.

Furthermore, although diversity and inclusion are prevalent issues in today’s society, 52% of French people would not welcome the introduction of an openly lesbian princess. This reluctance is even more marked among older people, but younger people don’t entirely disagreewith 34% of 18-24 year olds expressing their opposition.

Regarding the issue of consent and the heteronormative representation of romantic relationships, 71% of those interviewed disapprove of the idea that Snow White is not saved by the prince only to find true love. Similarly, 70% of respondents do not want to remove the scene in which Prince Charming kisses Sleeping Beauty while she is unconscious.
