Michael Bay succeeds once again a masterful action film, using drones to invent shots never seen before, having fun with explosions and mass shootings. Filmed on a “small” budget of $40 million, the filming ofAmbulance last 38 days. Michael Bay thinks fast and shoots even faster, and he doesn’t avoid any obstacle to accomplish what he has in mind, though the scenario does not foresee it.

An incredible improvised sequence

One of the film’s strong sequences, the chase of the ambulance by two helicopters in the Los Angeles River canal, was in fact not planned at all, and was improvised and quickly shot by the director on a single topic: he had access to two helicopters that day. During the premiere ofAmbulance in Los Angeles, Jake Gyllenhaal told Variety about the making of this sequence.

We were on our way home, Yahya was driving the ambulance. We were almost done for the day, ready to take off our characters’ clothes and put our own back on. Michael called us on the radio: “Wait, come back, they just opened the LA River.” He said, “I have an idea! I have two helicopters!”

Once everyone was informed of his idea, Michael Bay quickly planned the shoot, with a good part of improvisation and coordination with the pilots involved in the sequence. He said: “I write my own action sequences and I’m very quick at it. I wanted a helicopter scene and I wrote that sequence for the best pilots in the world. We shot this scene in 2h30…

“That’s why we’re making a movie about Michael Bay.”

Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen are not it was not doubled for this sequence. He is therefore the first to remain on the side of the ambulance and shoot at the helicopters, and the second to drive the vehicle. At one point the helicopters fly very close to the ambulance. A dangerous situation that could become dramatic in the blink of an eye. Michael Bay says he told Jake Gyllenhaal:

Listen Jake, the helicopters are up there and they’ll come down about twenty feet away from you. They are the best drivers in the world, they have been doing it for 25 years. It might scare you, but don’t be!

In the end everything went well this sequence is one of the peaks ofAmbulance. And regarding Jake Gyllenhaal, the actor was thrilled with the experience: “Michael planned the scene, sort of improvised the scene, and we did it like that. Every day was a little like that. (…) That’s why we’re making a film about Michael Bay. To hang on to a vehicle right now and have fun.”
