Brian Cox turned down a role in an HBO series because of the salary offered
Brian Cox revealed that he dismissed roles in game of Thrones and franchise Pirates of the Caribbean. According to the memoir Putting the Rabbit in the Hat (2021), he refused to participate in the HBO series because the character offered died early in the narrative and the salary was not ideal.
“There has always been a tendency for American productions to treat British actors differently than Americans. In other words, they hire them for cheaper,” he said. Cox in an interview with The Guardian (via Variety).

Already in Pirates of the Caribbeanthe actor would play Weatherby Swann, a role that was left for Jonathan Pryce. “It would have made money, but of all the parts of the film, it was the most thankless,” she confessed. He also mentioned Johnny Depp: “AND Depp, personable as I imagine him to be, is so exaggerated. To mean, Edward Scissor Hands… Let’s be honest, if you arrive with your hands like that and pale, scary makeup on your face, you don’t need to do anything else. And he didn’t.”
