“I was shocked”: the great regret of the director of Love Actually

Love Actually: Christmas essentials

Published in December 2003, Current love it has become a must for end-of-year celebrations. This British romantic comedy, written and directed by Richard Curtis, weaves together a series of love stories set in London during the Christmas season. From the Prime Minister, played by Hugh Grant, who falls in love with his assistant, to a woman, played by Emma Thompson, who discovers that her husband may be having an affair, to a writer, played by Colin Firth, who finds love with his Portuguese housekeeper, the film explores the different facets of love through a multitude of characters and situations. With its blend of humor, emotion and touching moments, the film has captured the hearts of many viewers around the world.

Richard Curtis is repentant

However, despite its success, the film is not free from criticism. Richard Curtis, the director, recently expressed regret about some lines in the film, especially those regarding the weight of Natalie’s character, played by Martine McCutcheon (who is definitely not overweight). In the French version, she is even described on several occasions as “boulotte” (in the original version it is the term “chubby”, which could be translated as “enrobé”, used, in particular, during a sequence between the Prime Minister and his secretary ).

During an appearance at the Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival (via Today), Curtis said:

I remember how shocked I was five years ago when my daughter Scarlett told me, “You can never use the word ‘fat’ again.” And wow, she was right. I think I’m late and these jokes aren’t funny anymore. I don’t think I was malicious at the time, but I think I was distracted and not as smart as I should have been.

Over time, the perception of humor evolves and what it was once considered harmless it can now be seen in a different light. While Current love remains a film beloved by many fans, it is important to recognize and address the aspects that have not aged well.
