Martin Scorsese could no longer stand Leonardo DiCaprio’s improvisations

The Assassins of the Flower Moon : Martin Scorsese’s new film

With The Assassins of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese reunites with two of his most loyal collaborators Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio (who had never previously shot together for a Scorsese feature film). We mention first, among others, Taxi driver (1976), wild bull (1980), The Freedmen (1990) or even Casino (1995). And for the second, Aviator (2004), Infiltrators (2006), Shutter Island (2010) or even The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).

Fruitful collaborations therefore, most of which anchored in the collective unconscious. With The Assassins of the Flower Moonthis is once again a great film proposed by Martin Scorsese in which the two actors excel side by side Lily Gladstoneimpressive and true heroine of the film.

The story is based on the book The American note by David Grann who focuses on a murder case in the 1920s. In Oklahoma, the Osage tribe, having found oil on their land, becomes the target of envious men who decide to marry women of the tribe and thus inherit the land upon the death of their partner. De Niro plays William Hale, a rancher who claims to defend the tribe’s interests, but who actually pushes his nephew Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) to marry an Osage woman, Mollie (Lily Gladstone).

Leonardo DiCaprio’s “infinite” improvisations

In an interview given to Wall Street Journal, Martin Scorsese returned to his new collaboration with his two favorite actors. And while you might think the director has nothing but flattering things to say about it, he admitted that he did a little annoyed by Leonardo DiCaprio.

According to him, the two actors are extremely different in the way they work. With DiCaprio’s part, a propensity for dialogue that is too pronounced and improvisations. Martin Scorsese describes the actor’s lines during filming as “infinite, infinite, infinite“.

Bob didn’t want to talk anymore. Every now and then, he and I would look at each other and roll our eyes. And we said (to Leonardo Dicaprio): “You don’t need this dialogue.”

It just goes to show that even an actor as talented as Leonardo DiCaprio, whose almost every performance in his career borders on excellence, sometimes needs to be called to order. And when the request comes from Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, firstwe accept.

The Assassins of the Flower Moon is available in theaters from October 18th.
